tie rod came loose

245 owner here, as you can see in the picture my tie rod came loose. Admitedly I don't know much about this,... I have an operators manual that tells me how to do a front wheel alignment, how is tie rod held on to the ball??

That came loose because it wore out due to no grease. replace it and try greasing the tractor like the Lord intended. lack of lubrication has ruined many tractor.Buy a mule it will refuse to work when neglected.

take the nut of the top by the tire .
then hit on the part the nut tighten on .
the loosen the nut on the the tie rod tube [ it could be left hand thread ] .
then turn out the old part .
if you got a manuel set the toe in .

Yea no grease on those. A cheap and dirty patch is a U shaped piece of steel, welded to the tie rod after hammering the thing back together. 1/4 deg front end alinement shim works great(any shop that does alignments will have one)

It is a lack of lubrication that caused it to fail however you interpret the reason for that. Why oh why did manufacturers stop fitting grease nipples(sorry USA)to these. To sell more is the answer. You can grease them though! Punture a small hole in the rubber and use spray grease with a straw is but one option. Glad I wasn"t on the road with you coming the other way. The other joints will be worth looking closely at!!!!!!!!

Hi,
I would agree with Tom. All ball joints give worning that they are well on the way to failing. This can be shimmying on the road or a delay in the wheels moving when you turn the steering. UK and most European tractors no longer have grease nipples fitted. It is possible to drill the sheet metal cap and fit a nipple in some. Most over here are a neat fit on the pin and have a retainer to hold the boot onto the body. Remove the retainer ring when new and pack as much grease as you can around the ball. Refit the boot. Excess will escape. The grease hopefully will work its way in. As far as the ball joint is concerned I would advise replacing it.....your life may depend on it.

Yup, it's junk. I just replaced all the tie rod ends on our 285 this last summer because there was a bunch of slop. I don't think it came apart, but I really don't remember.
