MF 65 Noises

I just picked up a MF 65 at auction. After running for a while it would make sharp knocking sounds from the transmission area at high rpms. It had some water in the tranny/hydraulic oil (milky) which I have drained. There is a small amount of metal shavings on the plug magnet, but no chunks of metal. I am wondering if I should refill the tranny and see if the water free oil tightens things up, or open something up to look for bad bearings. Where should I be looking? The noise is present regardless of clutch position or hydraulic load - vibration is worse at high rpm - minimal when first started.

Hi,
As a starting test run the engine at medium speed until the noise can be heard. Press the clutch pedal to the floor as if you were going to engae or disengage the PTO. If the noise stops when the pedal is fully pressed your problem might be a broken pump dowel/s or broken front plate on the pump.
If this is the source of the noise it is because the pump is being allowed to 'rattle' in the casing.
Pressing the pedal fully stops the drive to the pump and consequently any movement of it.

Hi David,
I recall the noise being present whether the clutch is depressed or not. I thought that it might be a bearing in the PTO so I pushed and released the clutch pedal. Didn"t seem to change at all. I would need to fill the transmission again and try it at medium rpms to be absolutely sure. I suppose that I can drain the fluid into clean buckets and re-use if it I need to open it up.

How is your clutch functioning ?

It is a two-stage clutch, does the p.t.o. stop spinning when the pedal is fully depressed ? If yes, at that time there is nothing turning/moving in the transmission area except the clutch itself.
So could the clutch itself be the source of the knocking ? If it occurs at mid to high r.p.m.'s, maybe it is a broken clutch facing that is forced outward thus hitting the transmission case when subjected to the higher revs.

There is an inspection cover under the clutch if you chose to have a look see.

Eric,
The PTO stops when the clutch is fully depressed. It is certainly possible that there is something wrong with the clutch since you tell me that nothing in the transmission is turning when the clutch pedal is fully depressed.
I am going to re-fill the transmission and really pay attention to the effect of the clutch on the noise. Thanks very much for the reply!

I live near Litchfield.

I have given more thought to my first post. Since your clutch is functioning properly, the knock would not be coming from a loose friction pad because that noise would stop when the clutch is disengaged.

But since other components of the clutch would still be spinning, your noise could still be clutch related.
