mf 40 industrial axle pin

Hello, it"s been a while since I"ve been dubbing around on here, been really busy. A few years ago I rebuilt the engine on my massey (ad3.152 diesel) and after several years I finally have the desire to get some paint on the ole girl (she looks really rough) before I do though, I"ve been thinking about a few projects that I really need to get done first. One is on the front axle king pin. Mine continually backs out (towards the engine) except once I have always caught it in time and worked it back in with a couple screw drivers. I want to make it right. I think what I need to do is pull the pin and insert some shims between the axle and the carrier assemble to get out the slop. In mine there is excessive slop, which has stripped the pin bolt. I was wondering ( and I can"t really remember, and I am currently on my ship at sea) but can I pull that pin from the front, after removing the hydraulic pump, or can it only come off the rear, meaning I have to pull the loader/and front carrier off too?

Also, can anyone tell me the diameter of the pin? On the ship here I can make a few shims to bring home, and insert what I need.

Of course I need to repair the pin bolt, and remove the hydraulic pump shaft (which I anticipate being an adventure, and might back complete disassembly necessary anyway.

Thank you so much in advance

The pin is 2 inch od.I just. rebuilt a 40 front axle If you have to replace block that holds anchor pin [1/2x nc taper point bolt ].The .pin will come out either way pump shaft splined at pump end.tO remove rocking axle you will have to remove complete axle housing

As long as I can pull it all out from the front (I will have to unscrew the hydraulic pump shaft too) but then I was thinking I could pull the pin far enough forward to slide the shims and washer down in, then reinstall the pin.

My plan for the keeper bolt was to take a grade 8 bolt, turn the end to essentially make a slightly tapered dowel pin. Weld a nut on the axle, then I should be able to screw the bolt in to the pin and cinch it down.

I think that will work? I don't think I will have to take the whole axle out, maybe lift it up.

The most frustrating part is I had the whole thing apart twice, but in haste didn't fix it completely right. now I want to at least try to long term fix it.

Thanks very much for your input. Any pics of your tractor?

Your plan wont work if you recall pto shaft has flange at motor with shaft extending through axle pin. you have pull axle housing to get it out.My tractor is finished and painted except for bucket sorry i cant post pic.traper

If you ever do get pics, please post, I"d love to see them.

Did your hydraulic pump shaft unscrew from the flange bolted to the main crank pulley? I"ve had mine off once before, if I can get it unscrewed I could pull them off together, maybe not.

It wasn"t the end of the world to pull the whole front off, just would suck as I"d have to take the loader off too, which is a wicked pain.

Thanks very much for your help.

mf40inme, have you done the brakes in your MF40? I have one and there is no brakes, wondering how big of a job it is to change the disc's?

I feel like it was a cop out, but I had them done. I did everything else on it, but the brakes I did not.

Of course the wheels come off, the trumpets as well, it was a pretty big job. Right after I got it back I learned that I had a planetary axle shaft leak, so I had to take the planetary off and change the seal... I did that myself.

I am on the fence about fixing my MF40 up or selling and buying something better.
Needs brakes and rear tires. 3 point hitch doesn't work. Seems to always get stuck, maybe due to low clearance under belly and bald tires. Everything seems to be worn and loose. The bucket will need some major plating this year.

The best thing about this tractor is Perkins diesel always starts in the coldest weather as long as the battery is charged (alternator shot, so I put it on the charger every couple weeks).

I got about $5k invested into this machine and not sure if I should replace or rebuild.

Their was certainly a time that I have thought the same thing, and mine is/was pretty beaten. In fact when I got it, it wouldn't start without ether in the dead of summer.

Since then I have rebuilt the engine (YouTube, mf40 cold start; mines the one in Maine).

It is fairly prone to getting stuck, but really I love it, and the only thing I would change is 4 wheel drive.

I would think you'd have to spend a lot of money to get something truly better.

I guess sloppy bushing and pins although a drag are replaceable and kind of a testament to the fact that somebody beat the bag out of it, of course they also might not have owned a grease gun.
