Toolbox on a MF 165

Does anyone know the easiest/best place to attach a small (4x4x16) tool box on a MF 165?

UK 165's have the tool box at the base of each wing (fender). I don't think that American ones have this. The photo shows my 165 with a large tool box mounted alongside the engine. The bracket was fabricated similar to those fitted to the later 500 Series. Although large, this box is not always large enough.
It is made from 125 x 10mm plate (in stock at the time) with an angle bracket at the rear end to locate on two of the clutch housing bolts. The front bolt is a 3/4" into the axle casting. Hope this might be of some help.

Nice 165 Dave. US versions sure don't have fenders like that, mine does have a toolbox in the lower cast fender bracket. What engine does it have, 212 or 236? US had Continental G176 gas or Perkins 203. Luckily mine is a diesel.

I was talking about this with a friend of mine the other day. We had a 1965 MF165 that was bought new here in TN and the tool box on it was made into the lower part of the fender on the right side. It had a door that flipped open. Anybody else ever see one like that?

Hi Dieseltech,
The tractor is 1974 with a 212 engine, square axle and wet brakes. It was a MP but the gearbox was rebuilt to a 6 speed before I bought it.
236's were not fitted to 165's in the UK, or Europe as far as I am aware. The 168 here was fitted with the 236. There are a very few petrol 35's and 135's in the UK but again no 165's as far as I am aware or Perkins petrol versions. The 203 diesel was fitted to 165's up to approximately mid 1967.

Hi Jason,
Your description sounds like the standard UK type wing. The photo again of my 165 shows the boxes on either side. They were OK for small stuff like linkage pins etc but not much good for anything larger......or your lunch!

Hi Dave,the only 212 cube Perkins here in US were the gas models in 165 and 255 models. The US 175, 180, 265 and late 255 had 236 diesels. Also could have a gas 236 in later 175-180 models, probably made just for Tony! Very early 175-180 also used a 206 Continental, only saw one of those at the MF dealer when I worked there.

David the very last 165s had a derated 236 engine. My Uncle bought one new in 1977/78. It was gutless and had to be reset back to 168 settings. Then it was a good tractor!

I can believe that. Both The 175 and The 168 were good tractors that could pull "well above their weight" in their day. We had a 168 and 78hp ( pony power!) IH 674 at the same time and the Massey had far more guts.

Hi Sam,
Looks like I have to stand corrected here. Just checked John Farnworth's 'bible' for the 100 series and it does show a 165 with a 236 and also Spain's EBRO version of the 165.

Great looking tractor, great looking toolbox. My 11 year old son and I have been working away on our 165 (as you know) and we both said "wow" as we saw the picture.
