44 special wheelbase

I have seen a lot of discussion on the wheelbase differences between the 44 and special. I am not taking a position, but would like to know where the difference happened.

I have a 1951 44 RC with wide front, and can measure if needed.

i am talking about the standard tractor not the row crop, as i dont know how they measure up.
i am planning on measureing the two when i get a chance. i also have a feeling the clutch shaft is also longer on the special.
i am not taking sides either just curious now that i hear its only 1/4" longer when you can see the diff.

Will have to go out and measure to be sure but my Special isn"t noticeably longer than my father"s 53 RC or my 50 RC. It is longer than my 47 Standard. i thought it was a standard vs rowcrop thing. A 444 is also noticeably longer. Need to go out to the farm with a tape measure...

now that makes sense. as i figured there was a diff. of 5-6", that is visually seen. still will measure mine also.

Which casting did they lengthen?

I would also like to get the front step if anyone has one. I added the 3 pt to mine and fell flat on my face climbing off the back last fall.

Nevermind, brain fart, I will measure my RC from front to transmission on post.

Ignore the post on the other topic.

Hi, Guess what, the p/n of the frames of early,
late 44 and 44 special are all the same, also
diesel, all the same. Standards were a diff p/n.
Original p/n 9217A and subs to 766117M2. These
are our parts books from our dealership since
1940. Chuck

No, they installed the row crop frame on the late standard tractor, which make the tractor longer.
The standard or short frame, has only room for one bolt where the flywheel housing mount. It is find on 44 standard, and on all 30.
The long frame is for the row crop 44, late 44 standard, 33 and 55. On the 55 the frame has a different machining. On the long one, there are 2 holes under the flywheel housing, I believe one is for the 44-33 and the other for 55.

To illustrate look at the frame shape under the flywheel housing on these 2 pictures:
