Massey 1105 Pro Tune

Hey Massey Guys,
A good friend of mine has a small farming operation that I help with a lot. He uses an 1105 as his main field tractor and has asked me to give it an in depth tune up.
The tractor has always run good, he keeps good maintenance on it but its got a few hours on and needs a little freshening, plus He just wants more power.
I work as a Technician at our local John Deere dealer and am there for relatively savvy on diesel engines(not a master tech or nothin').. but not all that familiar with Massey's in particular.
So I have a few things that I would appreciate some help with. I'm hoping one of you out there is a retired Massey Technician who will have all this memorized. lol

Ok first of all we had the injection pump rebuilt at a local diesel shop and while it was there we had them crank it up 20% beyond what it was doing when they got it. Which according to them was all the pump could do so I'm not totally sure it hadn't been turned up in the past.
SO.... I plan on advancing the Injection timing a touch to improve the fuel economy, clean up the way it runs, help it run a bit cooler, and make it easier to start. That is where I need your help. What do I need to know before jumping in to that? Is it pretty straight froward? Will I need any special tools? And where can I find an engine manual that is better than an IT?
Also are there any other fine adjustments that I can make to the fuel or other wise to get the most out of the higher fuel rate(and help it run smooth)?

Yes I am going to set the valve clearances. Should I make them different from stock (considering the fuel rate and timing changes)?

Also the turbo is getting loose, so we're going to be changing it. Thinking of going with some thing newer with a similar exhaust housing, bigger intake housing and faster wheels in it to reduce turbo lag. Any suggestions? Or things I should know?

So basically were not planing on having a sled tractor when we are done, or any thing outrageous like that. But the 1105 shares like 98% of its engine and trans components with the 1135 so why not use the potential? lol

Any way I would appreciate any advice from those of you who have worked on these machines and are familiar with their inner workings. THANKS!!

To get 1135 power you need to make two major changes like I did to the 2 1105s that my brother and I used. Exhaust side of turbo is fine, but intake compressor side was replaced with larger size to increase boost air. The stock injection pump will not ever flow the fuel you need with 7.5 MM plungers it now has. I put in a 9MM head, still smaller than 1135 used but worked fine and had good economy. If you like call me after 7 PM IN time, 5748934172, be glad to talk to you. Tuesdays and thursdays are best.
The changes will really increase power and eliminate exhaust smoke that 1105 always had.

Hey Diesel Tech,
Thanks for the input, I did read about the pump plungers but since we already had the pump rebuilt that probably wont be an option right now. On a budget and all.(Although we may have go back later and do that) We don't necessarily have to match an 1135 just want to use the most potential of what we have on hand. The "Pro Tune" bit was mostly for humor. Any how I will probably give you a ring some time, Thanks Again!

And If any one else knows any thing that might help Id be grateful to know.

Good evening! In no way do I want to discourage you in your decision to power up your 1105 but just want you to be aware of three weak points that you'll possibly have problems with down the road after doing so. We bought a new 1135 in 1975 and owned it up until two years ago. We babied ours and anything needed fix got fixed with genuine Massey/agco parts ASAP! Got tired of working on the 1135 every year! Our 1135 ran really hot from the factory at 150hp.
Weak point #1.....head gaskets, we put four new head gaskets on ours! Planed the head, magnufluxed the head, copper coated the new gaskets and installed new bolts everytime with warming engine up and retorquing bolts and still couldn't hold a gasket on it.......we think it was due to high compression and running alot of horsepower???? We were gonna try switching to head studs like they used on the 1130 but decided to sell tractor instead!
Weak point #2......clutch system. Massey used a single disc dry clutch and if your not careful you can tear it up easily! We would put a clutch in ours every two years when we pulled a 16 row 7000 JD planter. The clutch disc pads are like brand new but it loosens the center rivets and eventually spins the centers out. Starting out with implement in ground is a big no-no! If he's using it as his primary tillage tractor male sure he lets the clutch out and while moving let the implement down into ground!!!!
Finally, weak point #3......cooling system. Massey skimped on the size of radiators in these tractors......cranking the horsepower up means more heat and I'm guessing its gonna run much warmer! Our 1135 would run between the green dot and black mark next to red. They really should have inter cooled these engines as they would have run much cooler! That's where JD had them beat with the 4430's and 4440's......they just run and run!
My recommendation for him would be to leave it alone and find a different tractor if he needs more power! We had nothing but issues one after another with our 1135 with high horsepower out of a 354 Perkins! If he's hooked on Massey tractors I'd recommend looking at a 1155 with the 540 v8. Lots of power, cheap to buy and much more dependable than a 1135/1105 with 354 Perkins.

Hey MF rules, thanks for the info (and warnings lol)and for passing on the wisdom, it will be put to good use. I will likely tighten the head bolts a touch, we may only get ours up to about 120 hp so hopefully the clutch will be good for that. He is kind to his equip. (we avoid starting under a load) so should be good. I,m hoping to tune (fuel timing) some of the heat out by making the most efficient use of the fuel. But we are doing a complete rebuild on the cooling system Raid., wtr pump, and flush ect. Thanks again!!

Oh yeah and we are looking into doing a full gauge set up. Boost, pyro., eng. oil temp, and a coolant gauge with numbers rather than colors.
