Thanks for the quick reply. "wet stacking" is when the engine slobbers out of the exhaust manifold or muffler, black and gooie. Usually caused by over fueling, but in my case its engine oil. I had a previous post under "175 engine problems". In the U.S. all serial numbers start with 236 and then serial number. Tractor serial is 9A 205880 which should make this a 1974. curiouser and curiouser!!! Thanks Dennis

Ok, makes sense then, she's glazed & breathin' heavy. I've seen Perkins engines start up this caper before, usually from using a multi-grade oil, and light working loads combined. In this area of Australia,(sub-tropical), just a straight 30 weight oil is best for these older engines. They HATE oils with all those extra "bells and whistles". The best SAE 30 oil to buy for these engines out here, is usually the stuff from the supermarket, and branded as "home-brand". Definately no added friction modifiers or low ash technology in these..... just what the doctor ordered!! Evan.

Hi Dennis, LD is 4.236 series, Parts list number is 038, Engine built in Mexico, Serial number is 00153, Built in 1975. Not sure about last set on numbers, as I can't find a reference to them. What do mean by "wet stacking", I've never heard of the term before? Evan.

Hi, add me to that list of not heard that term as well. Presumably relates to the exhaust 'stack' being wet inside. The last 175 was made in the UK around 1968/69 when it changed to the 178. Always interested to find models carried on elsewhere.DavidP
