I have an 1135 that came with the 540 shaft installed and the 1000 "stub" shaft. Just a shaft with a flange on the end with 5 or 6 bolt holes. I talked with an Agco/Mf mechanic who told me all their is to switching from 540 to 1000 is to unbolt the 540 shaft and bolt in the 1000 shaft using a different set of holes. Is this true? I haven't dug into it but need to switch it over to run my new baler this summer.

Just remove the 6 (I think) bolts holding the 540 stub shaft and the 1000 stub fits on the inner hub. I think it takes 4 bolts to fasten it on. Nothing has to be removed or inserted into the rearend. No oily mess!!

Yes, that is how our 1100 was, just undo the bolts and swap the shaft. It always used to amaze me how those bolts held up to jobs like rotovating, but they never failed us!
