MF 165 diagnosis

Hi guys,

I am trying to determine the right way to proceed to confirm diagnosis of my MF165 and make plans to repair.

In another thread, DieselTech and David P. have suggested that overheating has damaged rings or otherwise degraded compression. I believe they are right. I cannot start the tractor. I have tried everything including boosting. I was experiencing significant blow the last time I run. The entire conversation to this point is under thread MF165 Thermostat Removal.

My question is.... How can I confirm this diagnosis prior to committing to a tear down and rebuild? Can I measure compression properly turning on the starter motor only?

Any other advice? What's the right way to proceed?

Compression can be checked with starter and fully charged battery. Remove all injectors, then install diesel compression adaptor on cyl to be checked. I use a Snap On gauge set, but screw their fitting into a spare injector body to clamp into head. If your blowby is that bad, it sounds like all 4 pistons are damaged. I melted 2 pistons on S90 puller when it got too hot on the dyno once, but after it cooled off it still started and ran, but blowby was very high.

Hi Jamie,
As has been said the compression can be checked using the starter motor and suitable adaptors and gauge.
However at this time there seems little doubt that surgery is required. We can all speculate on what it MIGHT be and be none the wiser. For me the only thing to do is to remove the cylinder head and examine the pistons etc. Be prepared then to remove the sump (oil pan) to remove the pistons. I think that the answer will be fairly clear by the time you've done that.
