Massey harris 30

I have a MH 30 with broken crank and have a chance at a rebuilt motor out of a 22. I am pretty sure it will fit with some minor mods but I wouldn't mind some advise or comments.

The 22 had a smaller (cu in) motor then the 30 but had the same block. should fit right in just not as much power!!!

I have a block out of a MH30 that all that I know is wrong with it is the #2 piston went AWOL the day I started it up to drive it to the shop to figure out where the knock was coming from. Pulled the head off and knew where the knock was from a bad piston or should I say NO piston.

The 30 has a 162 cu in Continental whereas the 22's have a 124 cu in. For your info reserves, the blocks are identical in the 22 (124), the 101 Junior (140 or 162 cu in) and also the 30's. The earlier 101 Junior's had the 140, then in the later versions they had the 162.

The 30 series, I believe, replaced the 101 Jr with the updated 5 speed and hydraulic cultivator lift. The point being, if a 101 Jr motor is available, you may get lucky and find an identical 162 or at least a 140 to slip in place of your motor.

Another tid bit to remember, the 162 can be bored to a maximum of .120 over, if you ever need to know that anyway...and assumption (which agreeably is seldom a good thing) tells you there is probably similar room for expansion of the cylinders in the 124 and 140 also. I have never checked the crank throw differences to commit to memory, so I have no input on that.

I have my Continental Engine book right here, the F124, F140, and the F162 all had the same stroke, same rod and main bearings etc. I'm sure the rods were the same, book says the engine weight is also the same at 415 pounds. I have never done it but I'm sure the crankshafts would interchange. The same bore and stroke carried over to the F series 6 cylinder engines also. I'm not sure, but I thought a Massey 22 had the F140??? I have never owned one, nothing smaller than a 30 around here.

The MH30 used a continental F-162 cubic inch engine its entire production .The 124,the 140,and the 162 are all the same block design. The only difference is the size of the bore.In the model 30 tractor they raised the rpm.

The 162 in my MH30 had kittens, so I repowered it with a BMC diesel out of a Nuffield. Best thing I ever did. It took a bit of work though. BTW, the only mod was a hole in the hood for the oil filler as I didn't feel the love on removing the hood to change oil etc.
