MF165 Brakes

Have a 1960's (H Reg) dry braked 165. A little left on offside, none (pedal falls loose) on nearside. Need to do thje job. Could do with an A-Z of the task and a likely view on parts required if anyone can help please

Hi,
Are you in the UK? You mention that it is 'H' reg.
If so that puts it registered between August 1968 and end of July 1969. It makes no difference as it would still be a 'dry-braked' tractor.
Before any stripping you should ensure that both sides are adjusted correctly and the operating arms move freely. Are the adjuster nuts free and the bushes inside the arms free?
Usually if the rod coming out of the actuator housing is close to the back of the footplate bracket it will mean that the discs are worn out.

Remove any cab and preferably the wing (fender) on each side. Support the tractor under the centre and remove the wheel. Disconnect brake rods and wiring. Use a substantial trolley jack or lifting tackle to remove the axle. It's heavy so make sure that the lift keeps it in balance.

Inside you will see the inner bearing plate retained by two screws. Remove the screws and remove the plate. This will give access to the actuator and discs and seals. If the brakes are worn or show any signs of 'grabbing' it is always advisable to replace the actuators. They are quite expensive. This is the weakness with this type of 'dry' brake. Renew gaskets and reassemble. Please come back if you need any more help.

Hi David,

Yes to UK (Worcester). Many thanks for reply. I will check adjustments but think some new parts will be necessary. Really helpfull response, I was unclear about axle removal but get it now. Do I have to do anything different on diff lock side or take off just the same?

David, A few questions. With dry brakes, do I have to drain back end oil before taking of axle?
I am reckonong on new actuators and discs. I guess there will be a gasket each side. Will there be any additional seals I would need?
And an earlier question, do I do anything different with diff lock side or just remove as per the other.
Think that's all!

Hi,
Yes, there is a seal on each side of the brake compartment and its essential that both are replaced when servicing the dry brake system.
Yes, you do have to drain the oil.
The diff-lock cam has a spring to release it. You will need to remove the roll pin and can before you can remove the inner plate. You may need a clamp to compress the spring to fit the roll pin on reassembly.
Presumably you won't have far to travel to collect parts from A******e if I'm thinking correctly!!!!!
