foaming hyd fluid

Guys

I have a 165 with a gear driven PTO and aux hyd ports on the left side PTO shift lever plate. Over the winter I took this plate off. Behind it there was a flange that was held to the back of the plate with 3 allen screws. The plate lined up with aux ports.

yesterday I replaced the hyd fluid. After running the tractor for a few minutes I lost all hydraulics. When I checked the dip stick the fluid had foamed up. Not soapy but it had enough bubbles in it that it was more air than fluid.

Has anyone encountered this before? It has been cold if that helps....

Granted. Its the cheap TSC brand but this tractor is in semi retirement and only used for mowing and some loader work on the weekends so I didn't think the 25 bucks a gallon stuff was necessary.

Where to start?

Drain that fluid and buy the correct fluid from the mf dealership.

Have heard the dealership tech tell that to more than one customer who changed the trans/hyd fluid and refilled the sump with non spec fluid, then the lift stops working.

At least that is what I would try first.

If you do have to have the lift rebuilt, you have the right fluid.

Hydraulic fluid has no anti-forming.That is the reason its cheap. Hyd- Tran does and this is what you need. It has to have Hyd Tran on bucket. It may have air in system when it stopped working. I always check for the best prices,TSC is usually higher. It doesn't have to be from a tractor dealer, read spec on side of bucket.Try all auto parts or oil supplier.

MT in PA, I just finished changing my hydraulic / trans oil in my 165. My hydraulics had stopped working because of foaming oil. I changed out with new oil from the Massey Dealer here. He didn't give me the Perma-tran. He gave me a Shell product ,meeting the M1129 spec. This is the spec your oil needs to meet at a minimum. 8 gallons cost me $125 canadian. I'm sure its a bit cheaper in the US, everything is :).

I bought some generic fluid that did meet the M1129A spec, and I notice it foams more than I think it should. Next time I change it, it will be permatran poured back in it.

I drained all the fluid.

I looked at the bucket last night and it says can be used where M1129 and 1129A.

The data sheet says explicitly

PERFORMANCE LEVELS

Massey Ferguson - ESN-M2C, 134B, C, D
Agco, White, AllisChalmers - PF821XL, M-1127B, M-1129A, M1135, M1141,

Others...

J20A, B , C (Hy-Gard, Quatrol), D (Low Temp HyGard), J14B (303 Fluid), J14C, J21A
JIC 143, 145,145, 146 MS-1204, MS-1205 (TFD), MS
1206 (PowerGard), MS-1207 (Hy-Tran Plus), MS-1209
(Hy-Tran ESN-M2C, 134A, B, C, D; M2C86B,
M2C41B, M2C48B, M2C53A, FNHA-2-C-200, FNHA-
2-C-201, PF821XL, M-1127B, M-1129A, M1135, M1141,
Permatran III, Q-1722, TO-2, UDH Fluid

As I said it's all drained out and I'd tend to trust this board more than some oil MFG but is everyone still convinced this is a fluid problem??

Jason
You said your generic foamed more than it should but did it work? I get nothing from my 3pt now and it worked before.

They lift does still work on my 175 with that generic fluid. I don"t think it works as well as it did before though.

Farm equipment "mud sale" auction this saturday about a hour away if your interested. I'm leaving @ 7am
