Massey 240 Serial number

Is there a way to determine the serial number of a MF240 if there is no serial number plate? The tractor is either a 1985 or 1986 model.

The previous owner did not have a record of the the Serial number.

My tractor caught fire and the serial number plate is not on the hood.

When I get the serial number, where can I get a new plate?

I think that plate was on the instrument panel on the bottom right side. May have been a sticker, I don"t know which.
 
Some of the later 240s had the number stamped on top of the right lug of the hinged pin, below the top link attachment.
I don't know if that plate is still available over here in Britain. I will look around for one.

This might be helpful, might not;
On a 1997 MF 240-S, there"s two sorts of numbers. The tractor "model", "type" and "serial number" are stamped on the aluminum plate on the right side, riveted just below the instrument panel. The "type" and "serial number" are also stamped on the right-hand raised ear on the rear of the transmission housing. Big numbers, can"t miss them. The engine serial number is a totally different number, in my case it is a Perkins number, stamped into a raised boss on right side of engine block.
 
Thanks for everyone's help. I found a number just below the RH lift arm. The number is L562934.

What year is this Tractor? I looked at the 240 serial numbers on external_link, but could not find a serial starting with "L".

I believe that the serial number is just 562934. However, this presents a problem on the Agco parts site.

Below are the choices that I have for the parts manual:

1. "MF 240 TRACTOR, -> 522354 -> A20286 (GB) - 819701"
2. 240 TRACTOR - ---> A20287 ( GB ) - 819786
3. 240 (PRIOR TO S/N N01001) TRACTOR

Which is the correct choice for my tractor?
