Lucas Cav Pump on MF245

Just replaced o-rings on throttle and stop shaft. Fuel is no longer leaking. Upon reading Cav manual, it suggests packing the groove between the o-rings with Shell Alvania grease (yes, I should have read prior to repair) Question, will I have any issues since I didn't pack with grease? Thanks.

Hi,
Probably not in the short term. If the tractor is left out and the pump is on the side of the prevailing wind, then maybe at some time in the future.
It's a bit late to do anything now short of stripping it again. If you do you should find Vaseline just as effective.

David, thanks for the response. Any idea of the purpose of the grease. Since they mention to only pack the grease into the groove, it doesn't seem it would serve as lubrication for the o-rings.

CAV thought it was needed for shaft lubrication and longer O ring life. Newer Delphi pumps and Stanadyne just use 1 O ring now. Grease groove is no longer used, would not harm anything if it was left empty.

On the basis that a small gap might fill with water and cause a tightness at the least it is better to have it filled with grease of whatever type.
