MF 360 Engine Noise

Hello all. Trying to find the source of engine noise on a Perkins turbo 152 3 cylinder. Engine knocks at low and high rpm. Oil pressure was 50 psi. Removed head and #3 piston appears to be hitting valves on top judging from indentations on piston tops matching valves.

Looking for suggestions, should I remove oil pan and investigate further starting with rod bearings/pin?
 
Hi Brad,
Very likely causes are a failed small end bush or a big-end bearing. Turn the engine in the direction of rotation until number three piston starts to go down. When it is an inch or so from the top stop. Try and push the piston down by hand. I suspect that you will be able to push it up to 1/8" before it stops. If this is the case you will need to remove the sump (oil pan) to gain access to either and to be able to remove the piston if the BE journal is damaged. Check the condition of the crank journal thoroughly.

Will try it today and post results. Can the sump be removed without taking front end of and splitting tractor?

looks the same as my 202 when I got the pan off I had broken the crankshaft, hopefully YOU don't have that happen could be wrist pin ,rod bearings
 
You only have to slacken the bolts at the front of the engine where
it mounts to the cradle to remove the sump. remember there are
hidden bolts holding that sump!!

DavidP- You were spot on. I turned the engine until piston was traveling down. With the piston one inch below the top of block I manually pushed down on the piston and discovered about 1/8 drop. So, I'm on to removing the sump. My plan is to look for a bearing or wrist pin problem. Will post an update.
 
Look for hidden bolts up under the rear of the sump, You may need
an extension socket to reach them. Also two nuts at the front near
the timing cover. A lot of folk get caught out with these 4 bolts.
