I recently bought a Massey 3165( industrial 165) with IPTO. when I flip on the pto it starts up really fast. Havent tried it on my baler yet but i have the feeling it might just sheer the pin. Is it normal for it to jerk on or is it supposed to engage slowly? Also I am only use to live pto, Is it normal for a IPTO to run even with the cluch in. or do you have to flip the lever off to stop the pto

You have to engage the lever slowly on the PTO to keep from jerking. Yes the PTO will run no matter the clutch position. The lever is the only control for the PTO. HTH"s Lee
 
Always engage the PTO at tick-over and definately disengage it at
tickover, Or if you have some machine that still has momentum in
the shaft and no over-run clutch then stop the engine before
disengaging. This might not seem conventional to do this ...but
your brake will last a lot longer. The reason... once you disengage,
the oil is diverted from the clutch plates to the brake, immediately.
so the brake has a job to stop the revolving hub. So the slower you
can get that hub before disengaging the longer your brake
lasts........Your call!

Hi Sam, only new of one MF165 with independant PTO in my part of the UK. Most of the MF users bought the 168 if the wanted IPTO. Nice pictures of the fleet of Frenchs wagons, usually have a natter to them at the Newark tractor show. My 150 has IPTO. It's on or off, you have to idle engine and
engage slowly, I sheared several pins learning. I also added
an over-running clutch to save the brake. The brake is more
to hold than to stop.
 
We had a 168 which was a very good tractor as such but I hated that I.P.T.O. No matter how careful you were it always engaged 'suddenly'. Not good news if you had a loaded muckspreader on the back or that god awful 3 foot P.T.O. shaft with the wide angle coupling that was on our Howard Bigbaler Mk.1
