I need to change all oil in transmission and rear end. What oil should I use? I've been told not to use Hyd-Tran.I was told to use 15-45 motor oil.

I use Perma-Tran from the Massey dealer in my 65.

We did a lot testing on M.F.perma tran oil it has
a very good wear package. You can't beat it.I would
not use motor oil because it will not protect your
gears

Use the correct oil that M F calls for I have not figured out yet why people want to use 15-40 or something else The engineers spend thousand of $$$$$ and alot of time developing the correct oil to use then someone wants to change it I spent 50 years running equipment and working on heavy equipment and everytime someone used something they should have it cost them big time it just makes me shudder when they do this I caught one guy putting gas in with his diesel fuel so the trucks would start easier in the cold weather boy did he get a butt chewing

The book calls for SAE 90 in the summer and SAE 80 in the winter. There has been alot of discussion about the newer gear oils not being good for older tractors.You may be able to do a search to see what it's all about. I have been using hdra-tran in mine but it may cause problems later, I've only had it 26 years.

In the mid 70s I worked at a MF dealer,those old farmers would call for a pick up for their 65,165, no hyd lift. Most of the conversations went like this, it worked fine till I changed the oil last week, and now the lift won t work.(We made a lot of money from farm store oil.)

Over in Europe Massey Ferguson never recommended 90 or 80 gear oil. In fact when I bought my first American built Ferguson I thought someone had fitted a filler bung from something else. If we go to Massey Ferguson dealer for oil for these tractors we get Super Universal oil, which is 15W30 or 15W40. We never get the extremes of cold or heat that you get so we don't need a 'thin' oil for winter, but our tractors do run very hot driving choppers etc during summer and after running nothing but Massey Fergusons on our farm since 1963 all filled with 15W40 and no gear problems ever.....I would say it is safe to use 15W40.

i think alot depends on how you use your tractor. if you are doing serious farm work with it i would go with what the manual says to use. i only use my TO-35 to disc the garden a couple of times a year and to push snow when we get enough. if it is a light duty machine then i think you can get away with a lighter oil. i doubt if my "35" has 15 hours a year put on it.

What is the make up of Permatran? Like is it 15W40 or what?
This 'lighter' oil (15W40) is in nearly every working Massey Ferguson in Europe and we really do work them, I have done contract (custom) work with one tractor that has over 30,000 hrs on it. It is a 1976 tractor and the only rear end problems was it needed rings and one plate in the ipto unit about 5 years ago. The wet brakes are coming near the end of adjustment, but are not real snatchy or anything like that and there is a slight rumble in reverse, but it is still working away. So I am in a position to say it is OK to use 15W40. You will have instant hydraulic power in cold weather also!

i am hearing about some pretty thick stuff being put into gearboxes here. i live in upstate NY, gets cold and i really dont think 89/90 would be something you wanna operate your hydraulics on when its 10 degrees out. that stuff would be like peanut butter that cold? what about the Tractor Supply travelers brand or whatever the hell they call their tractor gear oil?

It is your tractor you can put what ever you want in it. However like was posted already the book says SAE90 in summer and SAE80 in winter. It also says MINERAL oil. Gear oil isn't the same thing. I would talk to an oil supplier and see what they recommend. Oils have changed over the years since the manual was printed. If you went to a Massey dealer now what would they recommend? Don't use engine oil in it, they are not the same thing.

If motor oil will not protect gears then maybe we should not use it in engines with gear driven timing?????. Massey Ferguson themselves have been reccomending Universal oil in engines and gearboxes since the early 60s.Anyway most of the older Fergusons seem to run real well on a half/half mixture of oil and water....until the frost comes!!!

This tractor came into my shop for a complete rebuild...It was running custard in the back axle for years and no noticable wear anywhere! Ingedients of this custard were water,oil, and a handfull or two of dusty soil!
