carb linkage z134

Hi everyone is there suppost to be a small return spring on the throttle plate rod that goes through carburator tsx 683. I don't have one now and can't get it to idle under 600rpm,I'm having trouble setting timing with timing light with engine spinning so fast. I just ordered a carb kit, Yesterday I fixed the distrubutor I had one of the advance springs fall off. I cleaned everything and replaced points, cond, cap, rotor with blue streak premium. used autolight 3116 plugs This is freshly rebuit engine new crank, sleves, pistons, valves, guides.

Oh Matt, here we go about the coffee can full of old springs again. After rebuilding the TO30, I had an assortment of springs in different directions until I could tame the idle down. I 'think' the governor springs you have been dealing with are the ones pulling the throttle butterfly back too... how many fergies you got? How many carbs you have? I've got a little trick. One 'extra' carb, $25 at a swap meet, rebuilt it, adjusted to make any engine run perfectly by getting everything around this carb adjusted as best as possible. Then put your resently rebuilt carb on another engine that is otherwise running perfect... make the carb adjustments from there... and maybe no need to swap back? cause now, you have 2 nice running tractors...or atleast an extra preset carb waiting for next time...sorta thing...

I don't think the throttle has a spring on it at the carburetor. The choke does, but not the throttle.
If you push the throttle lever back by hand will it go any lower? Is the adjusting screw in place on the carb for idle speed? What about with the governor linkage removed, will it go back to idle then?
Yeah, you can't set the timing at all if you're not at idle, it starts advancing pretty early, at least my 35 does. Got it timed the other night, it sounds really nice!! Still got a carb issue, not getting enough fuel when you snap the throttle open, carb was soaked in carb cleaner for 2-3 days and all new parts were put in. Anyway.....this is Matt's post, back to your idle problem.

thanks guys I just picked up the carb kit.I know why my hand throttle was not working, small drip falling off from oil pressure gauge right on to my new cork washer !!!! Inno I can lower the idle by hand but cannot get it idle below 600 stalls out. I am going off the tractor meter/tachcometer so I'm not sure how accurite it is ?? I'm going to pull carb off tonight for good soak.

Tony that is great idea with spare carb.I only have the one tractor, this is the first tractor I have driven let alone having to rebuild it.I can see how you could want more!!! It would be really handy to have one complete for refernce. I probly should have looked closer at this one before buying but I did'nt know what to look for, Now I know more and got to rebuild first motor, amazing how these things work.My wife laughs cause also learning to type and computer!!!

I would think the tractormeter would be as good as it gets as far as being accurate.
I've never really had much trouble getting them to idle, maybe I've just been lucky. Getting the carb cleaned/rebuilt is definitely a good place to start.
Sounds like you're doing very well for being a first timer. You must have good mechanical aptitude. My 202 was my first tractor, I bought it in running condition but needing a lot of TLC. That was about 3 years ago. The 202 has done a lot of work for me, it has a front end loader and a backhoe, it's been invaluable. This past summer/fall I picked up a TO-35 which was also running and had a front end loader and 3 pt. hitch which worked. I removed the loader because it had not business being on a tractor without power steering and I am currently freshening it up. I was hoping it would be my snow plowing machine this winter but I ran out of time to finish it before the snow came. Now that the due date is past I have decided to go a little/lot further with repairs.
It's a fun hobby, the tractors do earn their keep and it keeps me out of trouble!

Don't worry, whatever you paid for it, that is a nice 202. But I wouldn't let the dog drive it too far. All the new engine work AND rebuilt carb will only make you chase your tail (like the dog) alot longer than if one or the other was adjust well beforehand? But sometimes you get lucky!
Ya know help don't have to be fergie people, if you know anyone who tears into or even tunes up their own old fashioned engines, car, truck, other brand tractors- even lawnmowers eh! 2 heads are better than one, and since there is a long reach from starter switch to dist rotor or carb screws, an extra guy woking on the engine will be a world of help,
Hey it sounds like you are enjoying the job, while learning something valuable, while entertaining your wife... while teaching a houndog to drive.... yep, you're doin' OK...
did you post the pic of the dog on here? massey guys need to see that....

Hey Inno where did you get your carb kit from.I had one brought in by napa part# 2-1404 which is a echeline carb kit. I talked to two differn't stores they gave me same #. When I got the kit it was wrong it looked like it was for carb twice as big as my tsx 683 thanks also it did'nt have the throttle shaft in kit.

I order from this site but I am fortunate to live on the Canada/US border and have a place to ship the parts in the US. They don't ship to Canada.
I'm not sure where you would order parts in Canada.
In looking up Sparex parts in Canada I find McLeod Tractor Parts in Edmonton.

A 35 will not idle down if the throttle rod is not set correctly where it connects to the governor linkage. There is also a spring on the governor linkage, have you checked to see if the spring is there, broken or if it connected correctly.

I had the same problem you are describing after reinstalling the cylinder head on my MF 150. If you are missing any of the parts, chances are I have them. We just finished parting out a MF 50 and To-35.
