MF 245 Injector pump shafts leaking

i have a Massey Ferguson 245 Perkins diesel. it has been leaking out the top of the injector pump since i bought it and has gotten worse every year. from what i can tell it is a pretty common problem and i see it brought up in a few posts but haven't been been able to find a post specifically on replacing the seals. from what i have gathered is it in not too bad. pump doesn't need to be removed and parts are pretty cheap but there is a procedure that needs to be followed... would like to tackle this over the winter. can't stand the leak any longer. i have tried the search feature as well and got about 16,000 posts, so i may not be using it right. thanks.

i appreciate both replies. looks pretty easy. i was told by the MF dealer, that is no longer in business, that is is a job for a pump specialist only and that they don't even do them in house... i just couldn't take that as an answer. glad i looked in to it. now to find some seals. thanks again. will update when i get at it.

...one more thing though, i assume the cavity under the cover will have fuel in it. if so, will it be necessary to drain it first? not that i can possibly get any more fuel all over the engine... so i'm not worried about that. i plan on doing this job with the pump installed.

I just bought the parts to fix the same leak on my 245 but have
not done it yet. The parts were about $15 at a local injection
shop. They had them on the shelf and said they were a very
common part for a common problem. They also said it was an
easy do it yourself fix. We will see! Let us know how it goes. I
probably won't get to mine for a couple of weeks at least.

ok, so i got a rebuild kit finally. I called a bunch of dealers and was told "we don't deal with injector pump parts". got the from a guy in Bay City Michigan that rebuilds them. Diesel Fuel Injection Rebuild Center Inc. 989 892 0557. Complete kit was $24.58. Shipping was $9.00 but i had the parts in hand LESS than 24 hours later.

SO, i got the shaft seals in place and everything ready to go back on. spring in place and everything on. turned on fuel and bleed system. started seeing a seep around the cover gasket, which is new. The kit is a Delphi brand. The cover gasket is a white, almost plastic like coated sponge paper. I almost never use any kind of sealer on gaskets. Clean and dry is how i like to do it. But is there something that should be used on this cover gasket? Also i had a bit of a problem with the shut off shaft and link inside. It is pretty hard to know if the peg on the shaft is in the grove of the link... Does the link lay flat on the pump housing or should it be lifted up and ride on the top of the steel piece where the cover studs are? i had it laying to the side of the steel where it seemed to fall naturally but like i said, seemed to not be sure if it was meshing with the shaft peg. The peg should be close to the cover side wall, not away correct? So yea, what i thought would be the hard part was easy and what i took for being easy is giving me the trouble.

Got it done today. What i did was resurfaced the cover face with fine sand paper on a piece of glass. I also called Gary, the guy i got the kit from, and told him my issue. He said NOT to use any kind of gasket sealer and the older style gasket material was better but not available anymore. He also said that they often have some trouble with getting a seal on that cover on pumps they get in to rebuild and it sometimes takes some messing with to get them to not leak, bad design. The torque on the cover nuts should be 40-45 inch pounds.
