engine seals

Hello Robert,
In the UK the rope type was fitted up to engine number UA391044DL.
If you are not able to identify it by the engine number I do not think that you will be able to confirm which it is unless you split the tractor and remove the clutch and flywheel. Due to the lip on the backplate you will not be able to see the seal housing. Even if you took the sump off I do not think that a positive ID could be made.

Hello Robert, there are modern solutions which we have developed for older style engines to replace rope seals & later 2-piece rubber seals. Depending on quantity required there are two different design approaches which we use. This concept can be evolved to suit any older engines & should provide technically effective solutions for obsolete engine crankshaft seals.
 
I thought I had missed something until I read EJ70's comment. What a load of waffle!. Sorry Chris but you clearly have no idea what you are talking about when it comes to the replacement of a Perkins tractor rear crankshaft seal.

If you drop the sump as David has suggested, the semi-circle recess in the back of the sump will give you and indication as to which seal type you have.
If the recess where the "cork" sump seal sits is the same diameter as the front recess, the engine will be fitted with the rope type seals.
If the recess is much larger in diameter to the front semi-circle recess, it will be a lip-type seal arrangement.
