Massey 41 Sickle Mower

I found a 41 sickle mower today for a real good price, are they a good mower? I've heard good and bad things about them but i've never had one. Problem with it is, you can turn the big pulley by hand that the belt is on and the sickle will move just a few inches up and then come right back down, its like something has sheared in the gearbox, i saw on the parts page that a woodruff key was used on the crank, it might have broke or the crank is wore out. Anybody have any ideas or had one do this before?

I have a 32 model mf mower, just me, but it has never been a great mower, would have the same guards and bar.

Go with Jd or new Holland, must be able to buy parts and yes, if you use it much, you will need parts.

the 41 is a dynabalance i think and if it is it will out mow any deere or ih mower made. it will cut at any angle up a bank or down or straight up and down. it's a belt drive no pitment arm. not real easy to mount but once you do it it;s not bad

we had 2 of them.they were great.i used the 135 to mow with.when adjusted correct i could fly around the field.glenn fuller

I've had one of these for years and it is the best mower I have ever used. The weak point to me is the crankshaft in the head. Most people don't keep them greased. That may be the problem with that one. Last I knew they were still available but around $500 to $600. Another problem area is the tapered on the end of the sickle bar. If it gets loose it will beat out the hole it mounts to. Don't know if those are available or not. Check with a MF dealer on parts availability if you are going to buy it.

I've owned a couple #41's. Good mowers. Made by Vermeer for Massey. Many of the parts that commonly wear out are NLA. I now have a NH 451. Just as good and parts are easier to get, albeit more expensive.

We've had one for years, decent enough mower, but can't say we've compared it to anything else.

Phil pretty well summed them up.

I think it would have to be VERY VERY VERY cheap for me to buy one that wasn't working...

If the guards, ledger plates and knives are good, I'd chance on $300

Keeping in mind a complete, really decent working 41 can be a $1000 mower (at least here)

If you get it and you can't make it work...the sickle bar parts alone would recoup your investment to resell.
