looked at 3 MF-35s all dead two are doesel one is gas. now except for the obvious like tires, sheet metal, and external damage, all turn over what is specific to look for? the one diesel apparently has a knock in motor which tells me its rebuikd time. i do believe they are the 3 cyl perkins.

First thing I look at is the dash tags last letter for and M and the pto shifter for ground position which indicates 2 stage.Check dipsticks on engine and tranny for water, loose front end means lots of use, if it runs check oil pressure and clutch,look for a leak from the weep hole and expect a slight drip.

Is this a package deal or are you looking at three different sales? As 2 said, look for the two stage clutch. The tag on the dash or the whole dash may have been changed so I always go by the feel of the clutch pedal. Once the pedal is about half way down, you should feel increased pressure as the second stage is engaged.

Inspect the hydraulic top cover under the seat carefully for cracks. If the lift controls are not set up correctly and the relief valve doesn't blow, either the top cover or the hydraulic cylinder can break. You can test the hydraulics on a dead tractor by blocking the clutch pedal fully down to the running board, put the lift quadrant lever in the up position, engage the PTO in the 'engine' setting and then spin the PTO using a big socket on a drill. This will spin the pump and the lift arms should go up.

no they are a package deal. one is serial no-SNW-236188 other is SGM172751 didnt get third serial but now armed with more good info will take a second look. thanks for the info.

On my info ....
SNW 236188 = ‘Should be’ =Perkins (3cyl) diesel, with Multipower, One of the most reliable engines of the era. Multipower, good if it works, can be problematical. Built 1963.
SGM 172751= ‘Should be’ = 4 cyl Gas TO35 with dual clutch, built 1957 -

Dan I never thought of that proceedure for testing the pto on a dead engine.Now is there one for the oil pump on a dead engine without pullin the pan?

If the engine will spin over with the starter, I have pulled all the plugs so the engine will spin faster and connected a 12v battery directly to the starter. If the oil pump is any good you should get some kind of reading on the oil pressure gauge. I did this on a dead Farmall H I bought and got some oil pressure. Of course, you have to have a working gauge, or connect a good one up to the pressure port on the block.
