my 165 diesel has on the cold start instructions to use ether. it has no glow plugs. these instructions are on the tractor. it will not start without it when cold,but a 1 to 2 second shot while cranking and it starts right up. i been told notto use, use with discrection,or to follow tractor directions and don't worry aboutit. opinions please. i don't use it much in winter, maybe a dozen times or less.

Tom i'm not a big fan of either for the fact it dry's out the cylinders leaving little lubrication for the piston,rings and such but with diesel it shouldn't be to bad if using sparingly just enough to get the diesel to fire you should be fine.

Ether has been around since before diesels, and the two are growing appart because of scare tactics far as I am concerned. No you do not use ether and....OK 'starting fluid' and glow plugs at the same time, no you do not wash down the inside of the engine with enough to spraypaint a door, but...like Carling Black Labels... just fine if used in moderation....
To have the perfect combination of 400 pounds compression, fine fuel oils injected perfectly, I fine incredable after an engine is a few years old, so an old timer, no glow plugs, in winter.... it's 'starting fluid' or a gasoline model...or a horse.
My old IH 656 had a bracket under the dash for TWO spray cans- and it had glow plugs and a plug in heater... I presume the farmall guys knew these needed such a rig...
BTW, I spent nearly $400 on new glow plugs for my once junked Standard 23C.... to no avail. It didn't start any easier with preheat plugs...but will start everytime with a shot of ether...

The way you're doing it is fine. If your tractor runs good and starts right up when the weather is warmer, the ether just gives it a little boost in the cold. Just don't give it a 5 second shot if it won't start, plug it in for a while.

i have used ether for years .
i have repaired ether soaked engines to .
save your self problems install a coolant heater .
if its cold and windy wrap the front with an old carpet .
there are places around hear you get walking papers for using that stuff .

I put a 20 dollar TSC inline heater in the bottom radiator hose on my Massey. I plug it in for a hour or so before use in the winter. It starts right up without using the pre-heater. I never had a problem with starting but just figured the heater would be alot easier on it.
I have three Diesel tractors and have never touched them with any either. I use them all during the winter.

That 23c never started good if the sun went behind the clouds when it was new, I remember a guy back in england telling me this. His neigbors bought a diesel 35 with that motor and laughed at them for keeping the gas t20.
I guess it wasn't so funny the first cold day the gas was invited round to tow the 35 as it would not start.
I've also seen guys spend a fortune on these motors re building them and the fuel system they still don't start any better.
The secret is to make the holes in the indirect injection chamber bigger in the head where it enters the piston, from what ive heard about it.

Use some wd 40 or silicone spray works good in all my diesels. has lubicant in it.
