clutch adj. super 90

Have someone hold the center bolt on the pivot end of the clutch pedal. Loosen the locking bolt. Have the other person rotate his bolt until you have about 3/4 inch clearance, or free play between the clutch pedal and the clutch pedal upper stop. (Freeplay is the distance you push down the clutch pedal before the clutch release bearing hits the clutch fingers). Retighten lock bolt.

Thanks for the clutch info I have another question about this tractor some say to stay away from the multi power what are they refering to I havent bought this tractor yet but Im leaning pretty strong on purchasing it.

The multi-powers on these 90s are the greatest thing, when they are working.
Biggest problem with these units is the parts are getting hard to find. Clutches will have to be found at wreckers.
The reason these clutches give problems is....the Power steering pumps get weak and dont supply enough pressure to keep the clutches from slipping. Same thing goes with the PTO clutches. The whole tractor is run with the little PS pump located just in front of the brake pedals, inside of the clutch housing. If this is OK you should have a good tractor. Easiest way to tell if the PS pump is OK....Start the tractor, at an idle, turn the steering wheel. Should turn with your finger, all the way, each way. If you have to Rev the engine up to turn, the PS pump is weak. Also when you turn the wheel all the way to one side, and hold it the releif valve should squeal. Another indication of a good PS pump.
PS pumps are still available, but pricey..Over 1000.00. However once you have a new one they usually dont give trouble if you take care of them. Biggest problem is the gearshift boots get cracks in them and let rain water into the transmission, then it goes through the PS pump. Check the boots. Put new ones on.
Another weakness with the 90 is the brakes. They tend to stick and wear out. Again a lot is maintenance. There are grease nipples under the tractor which grease the brake pivots. Grease often.
Check the front wheels for sideways play...The bearings may need to be tightened, or replaced.
Diesel Head gaskets tend to blow out between NO 3 and 4 piston. Fairly easy fix if you Know how? And the head bolts have to be re-tightened after running a bit.
All in all I wouldnt be afraid of any 90. Best tractor of this size made. Bar none. The perkins diesel will take a lot of abuse and keep right on going. Easy start, and economical.
I am running 7 Massey 90s on my farm. 6 diesels. One with MP and one gas with MP. Always looking for more MP 90s.
I buy and fix up 90s as a bit of a hobby. Have a large selection of new and used parts, if you need something.
Up here (Canada) where I am at we have about 25+ 90s within 30 miles of me that I know of. Many of these people will not part with their 90s.
Sorry if my notes are a bit confusing...I am just going out to start work, so I am a bit rushed.
If you need any other advice (Good Or Bad?) Let me know.

Thanks Wayne for all the info. The one Im looking at is a gas would rather start a gasser in the winter here than a diesel ..will be in touch if i do buy it it also has a M F loader on it in real good condition but I didn't see a model # on the loader but than again I didn't look real close Thanks again Doug R

Wayne central wisconsin U S A Wayne will the 90 operate w/out the m p working on it and how do you use the low and high on the m p with the 8spd trans

Doug
Most times the MP will work in low MP, unless both the low range clutch and high range are warped from heat due to slippage. What happens is the clutch slips due to a poor PS pump, causing heat that warps the clutch. Then when you switch to the other range both clutches will still pull...Causing even more friction and heat.
Usually the high range clutch is the one that warps. I have a neighbor with this problem right now....he can still use it but it is a bit jumpy. We figure it may not be the clutches that warped...but the lip seals on the MP piston may be cracked. We will look at it possibly later this fall.
Using the MP is easy,,,Just put the tractor in the gear you desire, and high or low range. Then swich from low to high MP and back again. All the MP does is give you the ability to get a little extra speed from each of the 8 regular gears and two reverses. Giving you 16 speeds forward and 4 reverse.
One thing I am careful with my MPs is to idle back when shifting from High range 4th to the high range MP. In this gear...and even in third. There is such an immediate increase in speed that the clutch has to slip a bit, unles you clutch, idle down, MP shift, then let out the clutch. It is the same as shifting your standard transmission in your truck. Speed up, clutch, foot off the gas pedal, shift, release the clutch.
