Looking at possibley purchasing a Massey Ferguson Industrial 40B to use on my farm for hay, bush hogging, etc.. I have a 265 Massey with a loader that I really like and wonder how this tractor compares. Owner says it is about 52 hp with wet brakes and, as I would expect, the loader is very strong. The thing seems to be built like a tank. Any information is appreciated.

You would probably want to make sure it is the manual transmission with a clutch and not the instant reverse with the torque converter. With the instant reverse transmission the PTO will reverse direction along with the tractor. DH, you need a counterweight on the back for it to be really useful. Those wheel weights, even with loaded tires won't be near enough. Most of these units had a backhoe on them that probably weighed at least a ton and hung way out behind the rear axle for some leverage . We have a 1500# weight on ours and it's barely enough.

I believe they are the industrial version of a 255. I have one and the biggest problem is parts for the front end, steering cylinders and steering arms are expensive. It's been a good tractor, has the 6 speed manual shuttle. Great utility tractor but not a powerhouse. The loaders (massey 34a) are very tough.
I've used mine to rake and bale hay and it works ok.

I have a 40B that I have used for about 5 years now with no problems. Has plenty of power with 4 cylinder perkins diesel, 8 speed transmission, 2 stage clutch, pto with engine and ground speed. I have a bushhog front end loader on it that is very strong but can't back up a hill with it full even though have loaded back tires. Has heavy duty front axle non adjustable, and spin out rear wheels, with differental lock. My tractor was old state highway tractor. Really like it. DH
