I need to replace the pto clutch disc but the transmission clutch seems to be working fine so I would not like to replace it. The shop manual I have says a new 11" disc is required to adjust release lever height and then the old transmission disc can be reinstalled. Is there a way I can set the release lever height with the old disc? I am getting confused but maybe things will begin to make sense once I split the tractor and can visually see everything. Thanks |

| I split the tractor this morning and the pto clutch disc was in pieces. The transmission clutch was in decent shape but I am going to replace it also. The drive plate had 3 broken ears (not sure of the proper term) below the bolt holes so I am going to need to replace it also. What else should I look for? The rear seal has no oil leaks and there is a slight leak from transmission. Any advice on putting the dual clutch back together? Sorry for all the questions but I want to get it right the first time. Thanks |

| Thanks for the response. I am taking into consideration that it may be better to go ahead and replace the transmission clutch disc but if it appeared good I was wondering if it was possible to adjust everything corrrectly using the old one. Everything appears straight forward but I am trying to learn as much as possible before starting the project. I have read the article in the archives about putting the tractor back together and it was very informative. I looked through the inspection plate and can see a piece of the clutch. The pto engages but quits turning when in tall grass. Anymore tips and advice would be appreciated. I plan to start when I get off work Wednsday morning. Thanks again. |

| Hello Michael, To be able to give any furter advice we need to know a little more about the clutch set-up. On the periphery of the clutch unit you will see the 3 adjusting screws. If you have a feeler gauge set check the clearance in each one. If there is no clearance the PTO problem may be down to much of the PTO plate pressure being held off by the adjusters. If so adjust to approximately 090". This thickness is approximately equal to the thickness of two hand hacksaw blades with the teeth ground off. Do this and check the operation. You will require two 1/2"AF open ended spanners in good condition. Slacken the locknut slightly until you can screw the bolt in to give the clearance and then lock up. DavidP |

| Hello Michael, The workshop manual will always err on the side of convenience. Due to the amount of work involved (relatively small job for those more experienced with MF) they do not generally advise using the old plates. However if the plate is in good condition and no great amount of work is envisaged the old plate can be used. It must be remembered that there is sometimes a downside that an older aged lining can break. Any contamination from oil should also be taken into consideration. If your main 11" plate has significant wear then when fitted even with the cooling shims you may find that the release arms will protrude further and may not have enough movement to fully free the PTO clutch plate.
