275 pto that wont completely stop

Neighbor brought over his 275 and said the pto wouldnt completely stop. He has a single stage clutch with multipower. I am reading there is a brake pad that is supposed to stop the pto. The pto works well when turned on. Any thoughts? Any easy access of brake? Sorry- not a Massey guy- yet. Thanks

My 275 has been like that for years-ever since dad had it from new. Whenever we had to split it we would get it fixed and then a short time later the brake would be out. I think what happens is the pto lever gets bumped into the half engaged position on then it takes the pto brake out. I just turn the tractor off when I need to hook something to the pto. (not a bad idea anyway safety-wise)

Hello Tom,
Yes, it is usually the pad that is worn and will not allow the shaft to stop. Test it by selecting 'neutral' on the lever and using a piece of 2x2 wood or similar and jamming it against the shaft. The shaft should stop now.
It is only oil drag that is turning it but it is strong enough to turn a light implemet.

Replacement is straightforward but complicated a little by whatever (if any) auxilliary hyd arrangement you have. Drain the oil and remove the left hand round cover. You will see the independant PTO unit with the pad and cylinder on top. Remove the housing 23, complete with the pad. There is a very small O ring between the two so make sure that you don't lose it. New pads have a rough facing for better operation. Check the piston for wear. If all is OK reassemble but don't overtighten the shouldered bolt.

thanks guys- I really appreciate the help- I have ordered the brake and associated parts and will tackle this weekend. You might make me a Massey guy yet:)

pictures are great! It would be correct to say the brake actually is supposed to stop the clutch pack, right?

Hello Tom,
Yes, when you disengage the PTO the brake should bring it to a stop in about 5 seconds or less.
Many will rune heavy implements and disengage at working speed. To prolong the life of the brake pad throttle down first. Make sure that the over-run clutch on the implement's PTO shaft is free and working. If no over-run is fitted the implement momentum will force the PTO to turn against the pressure from the brake pad and wear it and the drum.
