135 multi power

I am going to look at a 1968 6 speed 135 continental gas with multi power. How can I tell if it is working properly or at all? What does the multi power do and how does it do it? I have some problems with my 2705's powershift so I am a little cautious. How often do the MPs break and can they be set in high or low and left there?

The Multi power is a Hydralic High and low which can be activated " on the go". There is only engine braking while in the High side which means the tractor will free wheel in low.The MP has been a very good option since they have been used on all Massey ferguson tractors since 1963.If they fail they are normanly in low. I have several MF tractors and I prefer MP transmissions.

thanks cropspray, do you know where in the gear train the unit is and if it can be activated externally? Can it slip or if it works it is fine? Can it be used continuously or meant for occasional or low power use? Can it be removed or bypassed in the event of problems?
My 1975 135 UK diesel serves me weell without it!

In the UK MP is often avoided as it has had issues on higher hours tractors.
It is expensive (and or time consuming) to repair although if working correctly is a useful addition to the machine . The additional pump means a higher rate of hydraulic oil delivery too, which could be useful for some modern hydraulic equipment.

That the tractor cannot be pull started in an emergency is a negative aspect as is it"s lack of engine braking in "low" especially if you live in steep hilly country.

For most hobby owners it"s biggest advantage is higher road speeds. Personally I would want plain old working reliability and would avoid it.

Can the tractor be pull started if left in high when shut off or is the tractor basically in neutral when shut off? I would hate to rely on the parking brake alone!

Hello Robert,
The auxilliary pump provides hydraulic power to the MP clutch pack to provide drive when the engine is running. As soon as the engine stops hyd power ceases and the pack becomes inoperative. The answer to your question is that there is no engine braking when the engine is switched off so you will be dependant on the parking brake. After 40 years of MF experience I am still a fan of MF but it is something that must be used correctly. It should not be used in 'low' for extended periods. This is not the intention as you should always use the highest gear possible for the job at hand. If used in low for extended periods it should be moved to 'high' occasionally to lubricate the plates as they can run dry, warm up and wear.
As Fergie Bach has said they can be expensive to repair but once done should last a long time.
If you have a combining valve fitted you will be able to achieve an increased oil flow but your maximum pressure will be 2000psi, that which the aux pump relief valve is set to. Being able to do this will depend on whether auxilliary hydraulics are fitted in having a dual element pump.
