Why does my Massey 165 jump out of low gear it is the stick by the main gear shift not the multiplexer or what ever the shifter is to the left of the steering wheel. I can hold it in low or wire it and it works. What is causing that and how do I fix that? High works great. |

| Hi, There are several things that could cause this. Starting with the least cause could be a broken or weak detent spring. The The detent itself is pointed and engages in grooves in the selector rod to hold it in gear. If either are worn it can jump out of gear. Next and the biggest one to cure may be excessively worn gear teeth in the reduction unit. This may have been caused by years of continual 'crashing' to engage gear. Instead of the gear teeth meeting squarely they are meeting at a shallow angle so that when a load is applied they are forced apart. The first step would be to remove the gearbox cover and examine the condition of the springs, detents and selector rods. Take care that none of the 3 springs (6-speed) fall inside.
