Ok I'm confused. My Direct injection engine(injectors at an angle in head) has flat top pistons, which is supposed to be for a indirect injected engine. Could this be why my rings and piston grooves were busted up when I took it apart. Could it have been assembled wrong by the previous mechanic/owner? It had excessive blowby when I bought it and the rings and grooves were busted up, which i thought may be from starter fluid, but it may have been from the wrong pistons? Hope you all can help.

You are correct in your thinking, the direct injection 152 should have swirl bowls in the pistons.

Glad to hear that. My rebuild kit has the hole in the new pistons. I was afraid that I recieved the wrong kit. Could that have caused the busted pistons and rings. It would make a difference on the fuel being injected, right?

Hi,
Just to take Sam's point a little further; Make sure that the swirl bowl or torroidal cavity is installed on the left side, that is to say closest to the injection pump. Don't forget that the numbers on the con-rods must also be installed on the pump side.
Flat-top pistons could certainly cause a bad fuel and air mix leading to excessive fuel in the bores and rapid wear or failure.

That engine would have had substantially higher compression as well - which could have contributed to the failure.
