Tinwork is made out of the remains of rotten Fiat cars and rusty bean tins, other than that they should be OK. Sam

These tractors were actually a re-badged Landini tractor out of Italy. The early Landini's had some problems with poor brakes and the transmission jumping out of gear in the range section. Massey issued a rework kit to rectify the gear problem, which worked OK. I would imagine that the tractor you are looking at would have been modified at some early stage of it's life by a dealer. To check if it has, place the range lever into "reverse". let it go and it should slightly "spring" to the side in that position. Now try to slide the shift lever back into neutral in a straight line movement. It should not move. The shift lever should need to be pushed slightly sideways again to shift back to the neutral position. These tractors had dry disc brakes that were quite poor, especially on very hilly terrain. Once overhauled, they were good for around 1000 hours work, before having to be re-built again. Engine is a Perkins, so no problems with reliability there. Diffs and final drives were reasonably bulletproof. Tinwork is usually rusty as primer couldn't have been invented or available in the factory when these were built, (lol), others may have something to add to this, hope this helps, Evan.

Apparently The Massey 600 series tractor cabs were built by Landini (? ) which may explain why they had a reputation for rotting away in no time!

Yes Roy, haven't seen a French built 600 series Massey out here either, without major "termite" infestation!

My neighbour bought a brand new 690 and he invited me to go and sit in the cab. As soon as I sat in it and felt the quality of the trim I thought to myself "Well this is utter rubbish".
