Has anyone had a problem with the shifter lever jumping out of gear? I did read that there should be some sort of retainer (mine has none) that is supposed to hold the lever in place.
I can not find any part that is called a retainer for the lever. Is it maybe a simple snap ring? And where on the lever does it go?

if you have access to a lathe u can make one out of 1" plastic rod if not try the plumbing box stores for seals or something that will go around the top of ball between the the retainer plate to push the stick down in farther. hope this helps.

sounds like the retainer plate or the ball is really worn get piece of hard plastic that you can make a new socket that will fit on top of the ball so it will push the ball down into gate farther. that was my next step. oh is the ball still on the end of the stick? if not thats your problem.sometimes it breaks of.

Thanks!
How did you make a socket out of plastic?
If you should ever have yours apart again, I would appreciate a photo of the end. I have no idea what it is supposed to look like. I can't tell how much of mine may be worn off :( My lever is the strait one. It is the same as the 52 Pacer, per Mr Gunston, who is also in need of measurements so he can repair his.

I have the diagram of the shift lever for the 54 Pony and the Pacer. They have the same transmission and shift lever. Go to tractorforum.com/f50/pacer-shift-lever-help-21807/ to see the parts for the lever. Sounds like the cap (#42) is worn allowing the lever (#40) to slip through and cause the transmission to go out of gear.

RL56, if you will take pictures and measurements and send them to me I can solve both of our problems. I just need pictures and measurement of the lever and the cap (40 & 42)

I have 52 with a straight shifter also but thats not the ? if you have a thick gasket under the shifter retaining cap take it out and just use some silicone sealer. this will move the ball end down into the notches so it won't pop out.
worked for me.
John

The shifter on the 54 Pony is straight. The early Pony's had the S shifter.

Thank you,
There is no where on the shifter lever for a pin to go through. Also, my shifter lever is strait, not the S shape I have seen listed for the Pony??? I took everything apart, and there is nothing broken. The only other part is a short spring that goes on the lever under the metal plate that holds the lever to the body of the tractor.
I am stumped. If anyone has pictures or diagram from the parts manuel and could post it here, I would be real appreciative.
Thanks.

I just noticed in your title on your post. If you looked up the serial # and it told you it is a 54 then you got a Pacer my friend (Not a bad thing) They only made them from 1954 to 1956. There were only around 2700 made.. they were still making the Pony at that time too but if you got the strait shifter it leaning tords the Pacer. If you can Post a picture

Thanks Jason1pa,
I rechecked my serial # yesterday and I do have a Pony. Mine was the 60th one built in 1954. My number is PGA 22729, built in Toronto, Canada.
I am the third owner of the tractor, the second owner lived across the road from the first, and I got the original owners manual with it. I will try to put up a picture, once I figure out how to do it here.

Are you sure you don't have a pacer instead of a Pony? Or at least a Pacer trans? I believe they have the strait shifter. i tryed looking up some photos on line to get a good picture. Couldnt see real good, but it looked like the Pacer did have a strait shifter. The Pony and the Pacer are the same from the bell housing back. It could of been changed threw the years..

As you can see from my photo, the shifter lever is as strait as an arrow...I am very positive that it is the original, as it looks as old as the rest of the tractor. This is why I am stumped. I can't figure why it keeps jumping out of gear. It did not always happen, just the past two years. I did not use it much last year. There is a clip that comes with the spring, which mine does not have. I wonder if maybe that is what is missing and where exactly does it go??

Yea that is for sure a Pony you got there!! Im just thinking that maybe during and after the production of the Pacers that the Ponys got the strait shifter as well. I normally don't see a Pony that new. Most seem to be in the late 40's or early 50's. I don't recall having a spring on mine, but if your sapost to have a clip and its not there thats where I would first start at

JUST BEAUTIFUL!!!!! Great Job!
The calendar photo I spoke about is owned by a restorer from Iowa. I"ll send you her name if you want it. I"ll have to get it from work. I also plan on haunting the antique tractor exhibits at the fairs this year to see what I can find out :) I live in New England and there are plenty of fairs and old tractors here :)
