I posted a message a while ago about my Massey Ferguson 158F and how the PTO and hydraulics didnt work. I have dropped the oil out of it and have cleaned the filter that was under the small plate at the back. Before puting new oil back in i put a mixture of oil and kerosene in it and drove it around a bit to wash the old oil around this was because the old oil had water in it. When i had this mixture in it the PTO and hydraulics worked but as soon as i put propper oil back in it the PTO would not work but when i tried the linkarms they would judder up about 300mm then drop back down then they would do the same process over and over agian. After leaving it a couple of days i ran the tractor again and when i tried the hydraulics nothing would work the link arms would not move at all. Does any one have any ideas what is wrong i have asked some people and some belive it is the hydraulic pump but others have said it isnt because it is showing the symptons the wrong way around eg: it works with a thin mixture and not a thick one rather than the other way around. Another idea a freind had was that there might be an internall filter inside the back end that is blocked up. Any help would be gratefull thanks.

Is it the filter up inside the trans housing that you cleaned? or have you found another one? Your symptoms all point towards oil starvation or cavitation in the filter. I just wonder has someone fitted a non standard filter with too fine mesh? I have had problems with some tractors with the long filter (about 4-5 inches long) and converted these tractors to the short filter(about 3" long) and no more problems. The long filter seems to pick up every thing from the bottom first and very often when I took them out they looked perfectly clean, anyway I washed them in petrol and blew them out with the airline, 1 hour later ...the same problem, fitted a new filter...no better. So tried a short filter from an older tractor and 15 yrs later, except for routine servicing, never had to look at it.
The short filter has to be held in place with a threaded rod screwed up through it into the pump, the long filter is spring loaded and is held up against the pump with the bottom plate.
Hope that helps....Sam

What oil are you using? It should be 15w/40 or super universal. Also you should have washed the filter again after flushing the tractor.
