I have recently acquired a Massey 285 and noticed that the PTO does not stop. I have tried the PTO lever in both positions and no change. I have not tried to hook up anything to the PTO yet, but i just wanted some opinions. Thanks in advance. |

My MF 285 PTO shaft turns for a while after I start it but it usually quits on its own after a short while. If there is a piece of equipment atached, it doesn't start until I engage the PTO lever. I've had the tractor for 6 or 7 years and it's done it since day one.

I have a MF 1085 which is similar to your tractor and It has the same problem--the pto turns all the time until I hook it up to a mower or some other piece of equipment then it quits. I hope this helps. Roy

It could be that you need a PTO brake pad fitted to the IPTO hub inside the trans housing. But, it could be a weak pump or, worse case scenario, warped discs in the IPTO hub. To test the hub simply try to turn the the PTO shaft by hand with the engine stopped, if it turns with a bit of a drag it is OK but if it feels real tight and doesn't want to turn then the plates are probably toasted! To check the pump you will need a hydraulic pressure testing gauge. Someone over your side will be able to tell where the testing position is, usually it is beside the PTO selector lever but on some tractors it had a pipe from this position and a remote testing port. This test could also pinpoint a burst pipe or a valve sticking open thus releasing all the pressure to the brake pad. Good luck and let us know your findings.....Sam

To add to Samn40's comments; With the engine at idle and the 'off' position selected on the control lever, try and prevent the pto shaft from turning using a piece of 3x2 wood or similar. If you are able to stop the rotation it would appear to be a brake pad problem. DavidP, South Wales

I was able to stop the shaft with a block of wood and with the tractor running now it does not turn. So i would suspect the brake like you said thanks!!!
