Iam about defeated. I found no flow from my tank and blowed the line out and now fuel flows freely. My problem is I cannot get my fuel bowl to fill up. I can loosen filter and it floods out from top of filter. I can loosne bleed screw and hand pump fuel out. the pump by hand feels a little spongy. Could the fuel pump be bad? Why would the fuel bowl not just gravity feed or pump feed to full? thank you in advance for any suggestions.

What brand filters are on tractor, if NAPA 3166 or WIX make sure top outer groove of filter is not blocked with extra o ring, will shut off fuel to filter. Have made several service calls to find this was done, took lines off filter base, fuel in OK but little or none out because inlet groove was blocked, is worth a look.

I think you have hit the nail on the head. I will check that blockage possibility today. The fact of no flow indicates to me something like you described makes sense. for sure it is driving me crazy. you fellows are unreal and I thank you for taking time to offer insights. will let you know what I fnd.

remove your fuel filter and see if the filter to housing sealing ring came out and got forced into the filter opening,on some brands of filters in can get forced into the filter and block fuel flow seen it happen a couple of times, it'll drive you crazy trying to to air bleed it

After you went through the priming procedure did you try to start the engine ?

I have dealt with some Case tractors that the glass bowl with a strainer inside is never full after changing and bleeding new filters. They always started and ran fine even though the glass bowl was not full. After a few hours in the field the bowl was magically full.

I tried to start the tractor but to no avail.In following Jerry advice of removing air it just seems not enough fuei is coming thru the filter. If i open the fuel line from the filter it just is not much of a flow. I tried a new filter also. I just can not logically figure why the fuel does not flow readily thru the filter. There is also a dry line at the injector pump inlet. any help you wonderful people can offer will be appreciated.

Maybe what ever you blew back into the tank is back again! If you have some snotty looking stuff in the bottom of yur fuel tank, you have a bacteria problem and you"ll need to clean the tank. Water condenses in the tank and the bacteria live at the fue/water interface, eat the fuel and make a snotty looking mass.

Next make sure the fuel filter isn"t clogged. If the pump feels spongy, it sounds to me like there maybe air in the line. Make sure that all the connections are tight.
Then you"ll need to bleed the entire system from the tank to the injectors.

Here"s some instructions on how to bleed a diesel fuel system:

Bleeding a Diesel Fuel System


Start at the fuel outlet of the tank (inlet to the filter). Shut the tank valve, remove the line at the filter inlet and holding a suitable container to catch the diesel fuel, open the valve. You should have a CONTINUOUS rush/flow of fuel out of the line. If it dribbles or is intermittent, check the fuel cap for a blockage of the fuel vent or the strainer upstream of the valve for clogging. The strainer/screen is attached to the shut-off valve, and is positioned up inside the tank. You will have to drain the tank and pull the valve to clean the screen.
If you have good fuel flow at that point, reconnect the line and open the bleeder screw at the top of the filter. Turn on the tank valve and wait till you have a steady flow of fuel with no bubbles at the top of the filter, then close the bleeder screw.
Your pump may have a bleeder screw. If so, open that until fuel streams out with no bubbles, then close it. If you cannot identify the bleeder screw, loosen the inlet connection at the pump and purge air at that point.
Go back and make sure ALL the fittings in the fuel delivery system are tight so they cannot suck air.
Make sure the battery is fully charged. Loosen the fuel fittings at the injectors, either one at a time or all at once. Crank the engine till you see all fuel at the injector fittings and then tighten the fittings. If you do indvidual fittings, the engine will usually start before you get to the last fitting.
Alternatively, you can "tow-start" it to save wear and tear on your starter. Leave the injector lines cracked open at the injectors at first to purge the lines. Then tighten them up and she should start.
Your injection pump puts out a very small amount of fuel (high pressure/low volume). BE PATIENT. If the lines are totally empty, it takes a lot of cranking to fill them up.

I have a good flow to fuel pump, I have fuel the filter, no matter what I do the fuel filter does not fill up only about a half inch in bottom of glass. I open bleeder at top of filter and hand pump fuel pump and get a slow stream no bubbles. I don't understand why no fuel in bowl. should the bowl be full in order to start trying to get fuel to outlet fitting? thanks for your patience.

Isn"t your bleeder screw at the top of the filter? You are supposed to bleed the filter til nothing but fuel(no air bubbles) come out of the filter bleeder screw. If you"re doing that and the filter doesn"t fill up and you have a gravity system, there something wrong with the fuel supply from the tank to the filter. The only other possibility is that your fuel level is lower than the top of the filter.

If you have a lift pump system then you have to bleed with the manual lever on the lift pump until there is no air in the filter as indicated by no bubbles at the filter bleeder screw. If you can"t manualy completely bleed the filter than there is an air leak in the line or the manual lift pump is faulty.

Thank you Jerry. the bleeder screw or what I think is the bleeder screw is like a cap screw (maybe a 5/8 wrench) on top but not a lot pours out. I manually pump and it seems powerful to the filter but the outlet side is almost nothing. could i have messed up someway installing the filter. I replaced the gaskets including the o ring. I have it right side up according to the arrows on filter. I will try again tommorrow, it must be air somewhere.

Jerry,
If your filter is new check and make sure it has slots for the fuel to flow though. I have made a few calls in the last two months because the filters are not made right.

How can I say "thank you" enough for each and everyone of you who offered so much help. It was a gasket problem in the filter. It would not allow the fuel to come down and flow.
