Well, the Standard diesel engine has been living on repreves for months now. The lift wouldn't raise the bushog, so I reckoned it was the 4 way valve someone put on the cover, and was siezed tight in whatever positions it is in. So I put on the plain cover, oh it lifted alright, so I shut it down- due to endless smoke, and a few mintues later, restarted... with a bang! A bolt came out straight up into the seat and away, another nut had unscrewed itself... in a split second? And of course... it doesn't likt anymore... I must have busted the pump right? So enough of that lemon. I start and move a Cont engine TO35 to pressure wash it. A sweet tractor. As I spray down the pump cover.... I see bead upon bead of nickel weld on the cover. A nice job but still... this must be a sore spot on these models? As is the lower link pin I am replacing - on another mid 50's fergie....
SO! What did I do and how do I mend it? Inno is a veteran at this isn't he? The engine is a dead issue, but this back half I wanted to bolt to another engine, I don't want to part it out...

My orig. piston fit in the new cylinder luckily. The new cylinder fit properly and seemed a bit more beefy although less "refined" than the original 50 year old one. So far it's been working very well........so far......

Sorry, no video of this one Tony, I was in too much of a rush to get it back together. There are excerpts on You Tube from a video series on rebuilding the 3pt lift but they don't go into much detail as they are trying to sell you a video.

Did you take it apart yet so see how damaged the cylinder is? We can compare.......I think my broken one is still on the work bench.

I know that sinking feeling when it lets out that loud BANG!! On mine it was the lift cylinder that split, not the cover. New cylinder and relief valve fixed things up. A veteran? No. But I would tackle one again with instructions from John (UK).

Oh I hope you made a youtube of this procedure! Did you find a piston easy enough? I see one for sale on this site. I hope to not cannibalize for another old weak one.. or is this better than having the cover explode?

Sounds like you had the lift lever in the constant pumping position after removing the 4 way valve. Did that once a long time ago. You always remember something like that for the rest of your life.

Tony, Tony, Tony,...If it wasn't a quality Fergi, I'd say get rid of it! It's actually a very simple issue that you have encountered, and has been missed by some other previous owner.
I have come across many "brazed" lift covers over the years, that have been repaired, but the initial problem has never been found, and the relief valve is it.
Once the lift reaches the fully raised position, the relief valve has to "blow" off. Yours has not.
I can't tell you what has failed this time, but hopefully it's only the "o" ring under the lift cylinder. But, please promise me you will replace the relief valve in the pump, before putting her back to work, ok?
Evan.

Yes Evan I promise to replace the valve.... 'IF' this ...diesel... tractor... half a tractor.... EVER goes back to work...
Just seemed ..ominous? That within an hour of breaking this, I discover the next project had an even worse breakage, a very long time ago. Sets a mind to thinking eh???

Pump might be OK, but the lift cylinder may be pooched and it has definitely come loose from the cover. Time for some heavy lifting and have a look inside to determine the extent of the damage!
