I have a Massey Ferguson 50 with a Z134. I rebuilt the motor a couple years ago and replaced everything new except for the ball and cage type governor. The only reason i didn"t replace it is because it worked like a new one before the motor was rebuilt. The motor works great, starts quick, idles perfect but the governor does not work. Is there any way to check it without tearing the whole front of the tractor off again. Thanks. |

My 50 does the same.I thought i had found the problem while working on the 35 and noticed the spring that hooks on the water pump was missing on the 50, replaced it and reset tension and friction washer. Mine is still "creeping". Let me know what you find.

Taking a shot in the dark here - with no pictures... does it have no springs? Or the springs just unhooked and hanging there? but not having tension to return the rod?

Make sure carb to gov rod is not binding, and length is not set too short as gov action will be sluggish, if set too long will cause a surge problem if weight unit is working correctly. Have also seen tractors that need gov shaft needle bearings and shaft replaced in timing cover too. All parts must work freely and pin holes not be extremely loose from wear for good gov action.

I have a service manual for this tractor and have adjusted everything exactly as the book states. Still can't get it to do anything. Another thing that I forgot to mention and I apologize is, when the tractor is at an idle, the idle will creep up on it. I have replaced the friction washer with a new one and still does it. If you are going down hill and throttle down to an idle, the tractor will still gain RPM's, you have to hold the throttle lever foward in the idle position for it to stay at an idle. Is there anyway to tell by grabbing the governor rod where it goes through the cover to tell if the lip on the cage is in the wrong place. I remember reading when putting it back together that the lip on the cage had to be in the 8 oclock position.
