Changing oil in the 35 diesel

The manual says the screen in the oil pan must be removed and cleaned at each oil change.....who's brilliant idea was this? Can the gasket be re-used or do I have to find a new one?

Never heard of that, I just change the oil and filter. Never had any problems. Does yours have the round plate on the bottom of the oil pan? If it does I think you can see the screen through it.

The manual says:
Oil Pan Screen
Each time that the engine oil is changed, the screen in the oil pan must be removed, cleaned and placed back in position. Access to the screen is by removing the plate on the bottom of the oil pan.

The screens in these older tractors were to remove straw and other coarse material that might find a way in. Using modern oils and assuming that straw is not added:) it is not necessary to clean the screen. Assuming it is clean in the first place. IMHO

Well I took the screen out....held about another cup of dirty oil. Wasn't too bad of a job, looks like some sort of permanent gasket on the cover. Flushed it all out with diesel and filled up with Rotella T.

Eldon. Nice looking 35 you picked up. I saw the pictures on the Allis site, but didn't want to comment as it seems a lot of guys over there don't like MF. I have the exact unit,a 1963 perkins diesel. I haven't taken the screen out when changing the oil and filter, but based on what you told us,will be doing so this weekend as I am due for a oil change. I have had mine for about 10 years and love it for bush hogging with a 6 foot behind

Thanks Rick.....here is a pic for the rest. Not a bad tractor for $2500, plus got a 5' back blade and 5' brush mower and a set of mud chains in the deal.....

I once had an FE 35 with Perkins diesel engine like the one pictured below.

I always removed and cleaned the inlet strainer with each oil change. It's not very time consuming.

nice looking tractor for the money, not many British built 35s in the
US. I wonder did it come in new? A bit of trivia for any one
interested.... It has certainly been painted some time to look like a
TO35. British tractors had a 'stoneleigh grey' chassis and wheels
and a different lighting kit. (See above pic)
To answer your question, yes you should clean the internal mesh
and a smear of gasket seal should do as long as you don't break the
gasket.
