285 vs 1085

We have a 285 that has been a good tractor for us.

I'm debating going to look at a 1085.

I see on tractor data that the 285 has the 3ph rated at 4,900 lbs and the 1085 has the 3ph rated at 3,550 lbs.

Does anybody know for sure, is there really that much of a difference?

Is the whole rear end lighter on the 1085's?

Thanks,
JP.

ive spent time on a 1085 and dad owns a 1080 (basically same
tractor) and they are good tractors IF you use them like a 60-70HP
tractor. The 1085 handles like a really big tractor but do not let it
fool you.

If used correctly they can be a handy tractor.

The 1085 is an entire notch larger tractor- larger rearend, bigger engine, Cat 2 three point on most. The 1085 should be able to lift more on the 3 pt, or at least I would think so.

The 285 and 1085 are basically the same tractor. Both have the Perkins A4-318 engine. Both were available with the same tire options. The main difference was that the 1085 was the platform model in a taller frame. Both have the same catagory 2 three point. The 1085 was the newer version of the 1080. Good tractors with the exception of the head gasket issues and some hydraulic pump failures. As long as you don't try to pull the daylights out of it, they will last.

Same engine, trans & rearend, main difference to me is 285 will ride much better in the field. Dad had a 1085, worked well but on rough ground did ride worse because of high seat position on a short wheelbase tractor. Head gasket trouble is usually caused by lack of being retorqed when hot, can happen to most any tractor.

So the tractor data 3ph load ratings are incorrect, right?

1085 and 285 will be able to lift about the same on the three point hitch?

Thanks,
JP.

I'm looking at the 1979 buyers guide (silver book), the tractors are identical. Yes, tractor data is probably wrong, I have not looked at that site as I have the original Massey info in hand.
