Gas 510 Fuel consumption

A friend of mine has a gas 510 combine that has been sitting a shed for 15 years that he will sell to me for $500 and he will include a 13 ft bean head for that price. He says it has not been used a lot and is not worn out. Last weekend we put some gas in it and a battery on it and it started right up. It ran real good. I only farm 80 acres, so I don't need a big combine, but am a little worried about how much fuel it will burn harvesting beans and corn. Anyone have any experience with a gas 510 and knows how much fuel per acre gas 510's use? My Dad used to run a 750 diesel and it ran about 2 gal/acre, so I expect the gas combine will be 3 or 4 at a minimum. As long as fuel cost doesn't get out of hand it doesn't look like a bad deal. It is probably worth $500 in iron. I appreciate any input. Also, I plant 6r30 and I think a 6 row corn head is too big for a 510. Will a MF 1133 or MF 33 head work on a 510, or is the combine too wide for that small of head?

back in the early 90's i started with a 510 gas,and i think your close on the fuel per ac on this. there were a few diffrent motors they put in them, mine had a 327 in it. a few years later a guy i know had a 510 with a 354 inline 6 diesel motor and switched them as the gas motor ran hot and worryed about a fire. if you would want to switch later all the hole are in the bottom plate for the motors. i think to run a 6 row head you would need to add a cylinder for lift and weights to the back. might want to check with dealer and see what they say. hope this helps.

She'll use a lot of gas but on 80 acres a extra $3 per acre takes a while to add up. Our old 410 used 3 gal per acre.

Buying a known good machine is worth something.

Six row corn head would be a big load for a 510. And in 200 bu. corn you will be at about 1.5 mph and emptying the bin every 300 yards.

What would a diesel combine cost in your area? For the price difference you may come out ahead buying the gas. The dofference in price of the combines isn't to pay for all the gas, just the extra gas. Gotta remember that the cost of the combine has to be worked into the cost per acre of the crop.

The main problem I have seen with the 510 diesels in this area are they are worn out. The gas 510 appears to be in good shape. I don't want buy a combine that will be a big money pit in repairs. Since I don't have a lot acres I am willimg to spend a little more on fuel to get a better condition combine.

Do the math and compare the price difference in the fuel prices. Consider the fact your getting a good machine and only doing small acerage. I did when I purchased a new pickup four years ago and did the math. Thats why I drive a gaser instead of a diesel. I have no regrets buying the gas engine and spending the extra 10 grand I saved elsewhere.
