Fuel Lift Pump re-fitting?

You all knew there was going to be a daft question on the way...

We took the fuel lift pump off the MF40 to clean up the pump and area - it's caked in many years' build up of grot. Pump came off nicely. However, putting it back isn't quite so easy. Well it's easy to put it back with the curved lever part of the pump locating above the camshaft (I presume it's the camshaft?) but it won't go in with the lever below the camshaft (the studs for fixing the pump aren't coming out any time soon).

Is the pump meant to be actuated by the camshaft? I'm presuming it should be. Should the curved lever be under the camshaft? If so, how do I get it installed correctly?

Yes, a service manual is very high on my priority list but locating one is not being easy!

Your help greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Hi,
The pump lever must be on the upper side of the camshaft. You should be able to push the pump in to engage on the studs. Alternatively turn the engine until the heel (lowest part) of the cam is in line with where the pupm lever can make contact. A further alternative is to push the manual lever on the pump downwards as you fit it.
If you have a glass bowl type lift pump make sure that the gauze above the bowl is clean.
Before fitting the pump check that it is working by placing a finger over the inlet port and operating the lever. You should hear a sort of 'donkey' noise and feel the suction. If you do not have suction there may be debris trapped under the inlet valve or wear. If you take the top off do NOT retighten the screws without holding either lever in the full down/up position. Doing this 'stretches' the diaphragm equally. Don't over-tighten.

Many thanks! The pump does work (tested).

Incidentally where in SWales are you? I'm originally from Abergavenny :)

Not far away then! Shame I'm living "overseas" now!

Could you recommend any UK vendors for spares please? Especially for MF40 specific spares! I've grabbed a few of the Tractor mags from WHS but I would greatly appreciate some guidance (and info) from those who know! FWIW I'm currently using Agriline for the basic stuff but they don't stock everything!

Cheers

Hi,
I buy most of my spares direct from Bepco in the UK which is a trade supplier. For anything that they do not have such as MF-only parts I go to PV Dobson in Kendal, Cumbria.
parts @pvdobson.com.

Mark it for the attention of Ryan and tell him that you have been in contact with David Perrin from South Wales! Should be ok but you may need to contact 'construction parts' not the ag parts.
Dobsons are excellent for service.
Cheers
