Front Axle Drive Unit Question

This is my Landini 8860. It is very similar to MF 394 and some of the MF 600 series tractors. A few of the castings have the MF triangles on them.

It has developed and oil leak from the left front final drive where the arrow is pointed. I guess that I need to replace a seal.

Anybody had one of these apart? Any tips or advice? I have the Landini service manual but it is not a very good manual. It has a procedure that I will use but nothing like some experienced advice.

Thanks,
JP.

Hi,
You have a leaking hub seal. The procedure for repairing it depends on which generation of axle is fitted to your Landini.
You will need to drain the oil from the hub. The third pic shows both the filler and drain bung. Then unbolt the final drive cover plate, attached by the ten bolts. Now remove the circlip retaining the centre drive gear on the axle, and slide the gear off. There may or may not be a second circlip behind that, remove it if fitted.
Now, the earlier generation axle had a ring of 6 bolts holding the ring gear flange onto the swivel housing. Later models had a single retaining "nyloc locking nut".
Here's where it get's tricky.
If yours has the 6 bolts, remove them. You will now need to make a tool that "pulls" the hub from the swivel housing. A bridge type tool that bolts to the hub, via the outer threaded holes, and a threaded "screw" that works on the end of the axle will suffice.
If you have the later configuration with the single nut, you will need to remove the nut, either by manufacturing a special tool, or, take your chances, and remove the nut with a hammer and punch. You WILL need to replace the nut if you use the latter method.
Once the hub is removed, the seal will be revealed. Earlier generation axles used a simple "lip" type seal, usually manufactured by Cortego.
Later models used a "cassette" type seal, which will have to be bought from the original manufacturers. These take a little more skill to install. Save the old seal for installation purposes, or you may have to organise for your nearest Agco dealer serviceman to come and fit it for you. These later seals ain't cheap, so don't get too over zealous with it.
See how you go,
Evan.
(P.S. Tried up upload pic to explain the parts, but no luck).

See pic of hub arrangement. As I said earlier the hub could be retained by a set of bolts and a ring gear plate, 26 & 18, (see inset), or a single nyloc type nut, number 23.
Hope this helps,
Evan.

Hey Evan:

Where did you find the axle drawing that you posted above?

It is more accurate than any of the drawings in my service manual and I can't seem to find a Massey model in the on line parts with quite the same drawing.

Have the thing apart now and am just trying to find the correct part numbers. Would also be nice to have correct drawings to staple into my Landini service manual.

The previous owner apparently had it apart for some reason and re-assembled with the lip seal pinched over in one spot. Judging by the hammering that was done on the crown nut he was a fairly heavy handed mechanic. I've had it for 3 years. Funny that it just started leaking now.

Thanks,
JP.

JP, I had exactly the same problem on mine. Someone gave me the advice to replace the oil with graphite grease a year ago as I had the seal replaced twice without any luck. So far it remains perfect after the oil was replaced with the grease.
