MF 135 hydraulic filter / screen cleaning?

Can I "wash" the filter inside the transmission out with kerosene or diesel fuel or do I need to purchase a new one?

I do not know if this is just a screen or a replaceable filter.

Does anyone have suggestions or pictures of the safety wire to be cut off or put back on?

Thanks.

Hi,
Diesel or kerosene will be fine or petrol even. Even better if you have an airline to blow it out as well. Make sure the mesh is intact after cleaning.
A photo of a pump with the filter wired is attached.

Hi David, Very good advice as usual.

My neighbour tried to clean the filter in place with compressed air trough the inspection hole without removing the filter. He tough he will save time.

Result: The filter was dirty the compressed air perforated the fiter element. When he used the tractor the filter element pieces and dirt were aspirated in the pump causing damage requiring pump rebuilt. The filter must be removed for cleaning..and must be carefuly inspected before reinstallation in doubt...must be replaced by a new one.

The wire must be reattached..if not it may unscrew by vibration...fall in transmission then chewed by the gears and particles aspired by the pump = damaged pump.

My long preaching 2¢

David, Joe, thanks much for the advice. I"ll be cracking the pto shift cover hopefully this weekend to take a look at the filter. Then the axles to replace the inner seals, the pto seal and finally the shift boots. A good refill with UTF hydraulic fluid (or should this be transmission fluid?) A little re-wiring and it should be ready for hay season. By the way, I decided to put a brand new motor in. The original one came apart when I loaded it on my trailer at time of purchase and the inside of the block was run so hot it turned the inside of the block BLUE.

I"ll post some pics when I get it all back together.

Does your trator has Multi-Power or/and Independant PTO if yes: MF Permatran oil "must" be used.

If you have IPTO the filter change procedure
is by far different. Do not remove the pto shift cover there is a tube connected to it and must be removed by inside with hyd top cover removed.

If you have live PTO (controlled by the clutch) the the cover may be removed without problem.

My 2¢

Joe, No multi power, no diff lock and the pto is controlled by a 2 stage clutch.

So I guess I'm good to remove the cover and service the screen. I'm also assuming that I'm good to go with the Tractor Supply UTF Hydraulic fluid or should it be "transmission fluid" ?

Yes you shd be able to service the filter behind the PTO shifter plate. Take care when you put your hand inside because locking wire bracket on top of filter has sharp edges.

For "Universal Transmission Fluid" it shd be good if it is indicated on the container that is for transmission/differential/hydraulic. It will be cheaper than the Permatran III which cost over $100 for an oil change.

We always used Permatran oil because our tractors had MP and/or IPTO. To minimize possible leaks we keep the trans oil level on the middle (safe) mark on the dipstick never at the full mark.

Good luck

Thanks, Dave. I wondering the best way to wire the filter top back on the 165 that is my current project. The manual doesnt discuss that little detail!
