Black Smoke 205 Industrial

I'm getting a good deal of black smoke out the exhaust and the tractor is running rough....not smooth at all. The throttle is slow in response...when I press on the pedal, it takes 2-4 seconds to get up to the correct rpm.

I just rebuilt the engine (AD3.152), and had it running well for a while.

I've tried a few different lift pumps, one which was old and pretty much gravity feed (low psi) the tractor would run good and have the correct throttle response but it would die after doing a hard load like running rippers through hard pan dirt. Less black smoke would blow with this lift pump with low psi, pretty much 0-1 psi...tested with a fuel pressure gauge.

Another lift pump would produce around 7-9 psi fuel pressure (manual says I should have 6-10psi) and it is at this higher psi that's when the tractor would blow more black smoke and have erratic idle and slow/improper throttle response.

Is there some sort to fuel setting in the CAV injector pump I could try adjusting, or rotate the CAV a bit to try and change it's timing to lean it a bit?

Or do you think my valves went out of adjustment? I'm stumped.

Black smoke can also mean not enough air. Ran a telehandler that had similar problem, no run up and very low power. Air filter was worst (dirty) I have ever seen on any machine.

Could also be some sort of restriction in air inlet, wasp nest, mouse nest, etc.

Thanks. I'll check those.

I remember cleaning and going through the entire engine, cleaned the oil bath air filter, cleaned the intake, etc...cleaned everything, but I'll check that.

I have 89 hours on the rebuild so far.

Another idea I had was to install a fuel pressure regulator and reduce the fuel pressure down maybe to 4 psi to see if that helps.

Maybe the fuel back pressure is keeping something open in the CAV injector pump, where it wont close and allows too much fuel in...perhaps reducing the back pressure will help...I don't know, I'm really guessing at this point.
