A little help with MF 231 3 pt hydraulics

I've got a MF 231 that I use to mow and till some food plots. Yesterday I was tillingl with a 5 ft king kutter and after a couple hours (and I hit a few sumps which I think broke something in the hydraulic system) I moved the draft lever there was a clanging. Not real loud, but still I didn't want mess it up so I quit for the day. Today I tried it and there is no control of the 3pt. Its all the way down. The link arms move up and down freely by hand.

I'm no farmer, this is the first tractor I've ever operated, so I don't have a clue what could be wrong. It's got fluid. The loader works fine. The PTO works. I tilled a few hours today but I can no longer control the 3 pt.

Is there a cover or some way to open this up to take a look?

Yes, there is a cover that you can peer into but I wouldn"t know what I was looking at. David P, Masseynut, and others know the insides like the back of their hand. First, check that BOTH of your levers are in the proper position, inner is "position" and outer is "draft", the position should be all the way back(up) before the draft will work and vice versa. Your loader may have another lever that will prevent the 3pt from working. Massey"s have a tendency to "chatter" sometimes under load. Some tillers will chatter at certain positions due to the alignment/length of the PTO shaft. If you do a "search" on this page you may find some more info that will be helpful. Try to eliminate the "leverology" problem before you tear into the cover. Your mileage may vary.

The roller might have came off the linkage. As was stated David P or Masseynut would be the experts on the subject. Dave

Yep, your on the right track. Drain off 10 litres of transmission oil, and remove the RHS round diff housing side-cover. That's the one with the dipstick on it.
Take a look inside. You will see the "walking beam" hanging down from the top (hitch) cover. It will look like a piece of 4 m.m X 20 m.m. flat steel, with a cut out towards the lower end. It works on the control valve operating roller.
Work the position lever thru it's travel with the draft lever set in it's fully raised position. You should see the lever move back and forth. This will tell us that the adjustments are O.K. on the top cover.
Now, start the engine, with the draft and position levers in the raised position, and check for any oil leakage from the lift cylinder. You may need a torch, (sorry, flash-light), & a mirror, to see the lower part of the cylinder. Any excessive oil from the lift cylinder will indicate badly leaking seals, or a split cylinder,(my guess). An oil leak from the stand-pipe,(or stack-pipe), or the relief valve in the rear of the hydraulic pump, may also be visible.

Please advise on what you find.
Evan.
