MF204 workbull hydraulic problems

My neighbor has a 204 workbull that has some 3 point issues. First the draft control lever is stuck, the 3 pt hitch will only go up with a huge amount of weight on it, box blade goes up about 5 inches. I changed the hydraulic/trans oil and cleaned out the metal filter on the side of the engine. I have been debating on weather or not to rebuild that cover assembly under the seat. This tractor sat for 10+ years untouched in a grainery and has been running for 3 years now. Also, is there anything you can do about the PTO running backwards when you go backwards? He had a rude awakening one day with a brush cutter. Is it true that this tractor has a lot in common with a MF50?

The first thing he needs to do is get a operators manual for that tractor. The draft control lever should not be used to control a blade. It is made to control a ground engaging implement such as a plow. The inside lever is used to lift or lower a blade, bush hog. As the power take off it sounds as if he has it engaged in ground drive. In this mode the pto shaft turns in relation to the speed the tractor is moving. It should be in engine driven mode when using a bush hog. The pto lever has three positions: Forward is Ground speed, Center is disengaged, and to the rear is Engine driven. DH

If the pump works under full load, it's performing well and the system is definitely worth rebuilding.

It's probably just a matter of loosening stuck controls and readjustment - quite simple with a manual.

The cover will have to come off, and a chain hoist is almost mandatory - it's a heavy brute, and getting it back on is a bugger with manpower alone.

As for the PTO reverse, does that tractor have the instant reverse transmission with a forward-reverse-accelerator pedal on the right footrest?

If so, you're stuck with it! I have a 40 loader here with the same setup but no PTO. Looked at putting one in, but it's not live (operates only when the forward-reverse pedal is engaged), and that reverse rotation can be a killer.

Hydraulics work great. He quit moving the draft control lever and it rusted stuck. I bought him a manual on eBay for it. I am not too familiar with the MF shuttle transmissions. He has the factory loader on it with a 3pt hitch. I have seen some that had a backhoe. Where is this PTO lever to switch from engine to transmission drive? Is there anything to look for in the cover to rebuild/replace? Does agco offer a rebuilt kit for it?

PTO shift lever is down on the right side in a round plate just above the footrest, ankle height.

The only replaceable parts on the cover would be the rings in the lift ram and some o-rings, and with your lift performance these are likely not an issue.

You will need a few o-rings for the standpipe; everything else is clean-up, free-up and adjusting.
