Flushing contaminated hydraulic systems

Hello Folks

I notice that the ATF for the power streering in both the tractors I look after is pretty discoloured, and who knows when it may have been changed. - is there a procedure for doing this ??

One of these tractors is a Massey 165, the other (for my sins, man I must have done something wrong in a previous life, cause what else would have possessed a dear friend, one who I cannot refuse help too, to buy a Leyland 344 ??) is the Leyland.

The Leyland also has a water contaminated transmission case (yes I know replace the shift lever boots) that we have already tried unsucessfully to flush once. I think I read on here that it is possible to use diesel as a flushing agent for the transmission - basically warm machine up, drain oil, fill with diesel, run breifly and work hydraulics, drain and refill with fresh oil (many $$$ worth !!)

Any thoughts

Cheers - Foster

As I have posted before on this subject, try adding a litre, er, sorry, 1/4 of a gallon of methylated spirits, to your next fill. It is an old, but tried and proven method of "soaking up" moisture in transmission and hydraulic systems. If the contamination is really bad, a few changes of oil, unfortunately, may be necessary, along with the metho.
Water ingress can also be caused by high humidity, no matter how well sealed up your tractor is, as we have here in Queensland at the moment.

Hi
I recently changed the gearbox,PTO,and diff/trans in my MH 22. I think it really helped to put a piece of old garden hose on my air nozzle and poke around down in the diesel/solvent mix. It was summer and I left the plugs out overnight after two diesel/varsol flushes. I ended up changing the hydraulic when it was cold
(-15 C). I flushed it with diesel too but no varsol. It is a very good unit. I have recently done the generator/regulator and water pump.
It has just snowed another 15 cm so I get to plow again today.
