I RECENTLY PURCHASED A MH 50 AND AM UNSURE OF EXACTLY WHAT TYPE OF OIL TO PUT IN THE TRANSMISSION. ALSO DOES THE TRANSMISSION OIL MIX WITH THE HYDRAULICS AND THE REAR END FLUIDS? IS IT ALL THE SAME? THE MANUAL I HAVE ONLY TELLS A CAPACITY FOR THE TRANNY OF 32 QTS. ANY ADVICE WOULD BE MUCH APPRECIATED. THANKS IN ADVANCE. DENNIS

About 5 years ago I bought a Massey-Harris 50 from a Massey Ferguson dealer. It was delivered to me and when looking it over I noticed the milky oil around the fill cap. I thought water was in the oil and while running some had seeped out. I found out that it was mineral oil in the form of Universal Tractor Hydraulic Oil. The dealer had topped it up.I have never experienced any problems winter or summer, plowing snow, Brushhoging or drilling holes. Best of luck Dennis.

You have only one resivor for hydraulic fluid. It goes into the tractor next to the gear shifts. Your MH50 is pretty much the same as a Ferguson F40 and the later MF50. You want to use 80/90 wt mineral oil. I would recommend Massey Ferguson #M1103. I use it in my MF50 and like it. I would also recommend that you get yourself a parts, service and owners manual. These are great tractors and relatively easy to service, with a little elbow grease, great advice from this forum and help from a great guy, Big Dean!

Hey Dennis,

You brought up the biggest controversy this site argues about. Go to the following web site, page 2, last topic. The guys been tearing down these tractors for 27 years.

Link

You decide.

Enjoy your new toy.

Do not put gear oil,(80-90 wt.) in the trans.- hyd. system of your tractor. Use a good quality Hydralic-transmission fluid only. You can get it many places, even K-mart and Sam's club. Good luck.

my book has 80-90 gear/hydraulic oil-the trans & rear housing is the holding tank for the hydraulic system. hope this helps Gordon-(TN)

I wouldn't go putting in that 80-90wt stuff in yet. If you Put 90wt oil in most hydraulic systems bad things will happen.

Hydraulic systems tend to use 10wt possibly 30wt on the heavy end. Trans/hydraulic fluid is generally 10wt.

I'll profess not knowing much about MH's and could be wrong but it seems strange that they would design a hydraulic system to use 90wt gear oil.

Could the transmission use 90wt gear oil and the rear end use trans/hydraulic fluid.

I remember IH recomending HY Tran their trans/hydraulic fluid as a replacement for 90wt gear oil in their older tractors.

I'd get a second opinion.

I DONT UNDERSTAND OR SEE HOW YOU COULD PUT 90 WT IN THE TRANS AND 10 WT HYD OIL IN THE REAR END. THE MH 50 AS FAR AS I KNOW ONLY HAS ONE FILL POINT BY THE SHIFTER WHICH IS LABELED 80 WINTER AND 90 SUMMER. WHEN I FIRST DRAINED ALL THE OIL IT HAD TRANS HYD FLUID IN IT (THATS WHAT THE GUY I BOUGHT IT FROM TOLD ME IT USED). I REPLACED IT WITH THE SAME AND THEN NOTICED THE LABEL ON THE FILL CAP. NOW AFTER RUNNING AND USING A BOX BLADE FOR AN HOUR OR SO THE LIFT HAS TROUBLE LIFTING MY BOX. THIS IS WHY I ORIGINALLY ASKED THE QUESTION OF OIL TYPE. COULD IT BE THE TRANS HYD FLUID IS GETTING TO THIN WHEN HOT?
THANKS FOR THE REPLIES

Dennis,

If you are using 80/90 wt mineral oil and your lift slows, it is not the oil. It is your hydro system that needs trouble shooting.

Dennis- If the tractor was brand new and everything was tight and not worn it would work allright with the thinner more modern all-purpose hydraulic/gear oil. Obviously the tractor was originally designed for the 80/90 weight mineral oil to run in the combined trans/hydraulic/rear-end system; it says it on the cap and in the manual. It is also obvious you are having problems. Drain the unit and replace either with the MF 1130 oil that someone mentioned, or Kendall makes a product called Kentran 80 which is mineral oil with anti-rust additives and is very good. You will need about 8 gallons. Do NOT use regular hypoid GL-5 gear oil as would be used in an automotive rear-end, it has heavy metal additives and can eventually gum things up. If your lift still acts up when hot then you have other problems like relief valve, worn pump (most likely) or leaking piston/cylinder. Good luck.

Like I said I'm not an expert on your tractor.

Some tractors have different oils in the trans and read end - the two are seperatly sealed from each other. I guess yours is not.

The newer trans/hyd fluids actually have better lubricating and anti rust properties than good old 90wt. They even have additives to absorb water. If your tractor was built today trans/hyd would be the fluid.

Your tractor might very well be designed to use 90wt gear oil as a hyd fluid but that is not the norm.

Any hyd. components you buy today is not designed for 90wt oil. Because it's thicker valves won't work as designed creating an over pressure situation that will blow out a line, o-rings, your pump, or drive shaft driving your pump. You'll always have to order parts by the OEM part number and not use a hyd parts.

I responded because something didn't seem right. I'd love to hear a couple of individuals who own and work on a tractor like yours to understand why 90wt is used.

Oddballs features are always interesting to learn about.

THANKS FOR THE INFO GORDON.
ONE MORE QUESTION THOUGH.
I ASSUME THERE IS ONLY ONE PLACE TO FILL THE TRANNY/HYDRAULIC RESERVIOR/REAR END WHICH IS THRU THE CAP LOCATED NEXT TO THE GEAR SHIFT KNOB? THANKS AGAIN FOR YOUR REPLY. DENNIS
