Split-Rim Farmall 400

There's a split-rim Farmall 400 on eBay right now. I hadn't understood what "split-rim" meant until now that I've seen the pictures.

Does anybody know why they were built this way? Did make for easier assembly?

Inquiring minds want to know.

I am thinking they did it for a short time to represent farmalls that had split rims, but soon discontinued making them because it wasn't cost effective.

Because it is a PITA to try and put a stiff tractor tire over a rim!!! Split rims make the job a whole lot easier. You had to be careful that the lock ring engaged and inflated the tire in a safety cage. Otherwise those lock rings would go dangerously flying.

Thanks for the reply. I should have said, in my original question, that the tractor I saw on eBay was a toy Farmall 400.

Sorry for the confusion.

Loren,

I wasn't very specific in my original post. The tractor I was talking about was a toy 400 split-rim. Inflating is not much of a problem there...LOL.

Hope the sap harvest is going well. I sure enjoy your postings.
