Offshore built John Deere OP tractors

In the February issue of Toy Farmer, there is a picture of an "original 1930 John Deere General Purpose cast-iron tractor". It represents a narrow front tractor that Deere did not build until 1934.

We have all seen the off-shore built cast iron copies of Bob Gray's unstyled John Deere 'A' (or 'G'). Bob built a few of his tractors in the early '70s, and they are easily identified from the copies that are all over the place. The copies have been 'aged' and are often sold as 1930s toys.

Was there ever a toy like that made in the '30s? I am only aware of Vindex and Arcade from those days.

Morning Stan

From the info that I have no toy GP was made till the 80"s.

Just the D by Vindex was made in the 30"s. There was a ruff cast lead D produced as well in the 30"s by KT.

The first A was not produced untill 1940 by Arcade.

This info may be flawed by the fact that I"m kind of an IH man myself.:)~})

Gary,

Well, that's two of us that don't think there were any other JDs built in the '30s other than the Vindex 'D'. I have one of the Robert Gray models and it's plainly called a 'GP' on the hood. They are somewhat more detailed than the Taiwanese copies, which are called an 'OP'.
